HWH ride height sensor bad?

Yahoo Message Number: 101914
What is the symptom of a HWH ride height sensor going bad? I was re-spraying the wheel wells with undercoating this week and I used the HWH system to "raise" the suspension for some extra room, but only the front went up and the rear stayed at travel height.  All the leveling and travel functions seem to be working, and the ride is smooth & stable.  It's just the rear raising function that doesn't seem to be working.
Could that be a symptom the rear ride height sensor not functioning properly?  Are there other tests I could perform?  I have a spare that I could swap in, if it isn't too difficult to get at or replace.

Thanks,
Mark M

Mark,

The ride height valves have nothing to do with the HWH. They are completely separate and only are operational when the HWH is in travel mode..

A couple of questions,

Did you have the engine running while trying to raise the coach? Did you try using the up and down arrows that control just the rear or did you use the one button that controls the front and rear together?

On my coach the front will raise before the rear will make any changes and if the air pressure isn't up the rear will take a very long time to raise with the auxiliary compressor.

Hi Barney.

Thanks for the info.  I did have the engine running at high idle and the air was up to 120 psi but I might not have been patient enough to wait for the rear to come up.  The front came up right away and very quickly, and when the rear didn't do the same I just shut it off.  Perhaps I gave up too quickly.  The front stayed up for the hour I needed to work under there but the back never moved.
I did try moving everything back to "travel" mode and then using the single arrow to raise just the rear, but it didn't seem to do anything either.

I'll try it again tonight and will give it more time to react & see what happens.

Thanks!

Mark....You may be risking your life to rely on the air bags to hold up your bus while you go under it. Unless you use jacks or blocks to keep the chassis from falling, a sudden air bag failure may squish you! Be Careful.

Thanks David.

I am just raising up the chassis to make more room to reach my arm and a spray gun around the tires to spray some rubberized undercoating inside the wheel wells.  I could probably do it at normal ride height (which I did for the rear wells because the rear wouldn't raise with the air controls), but a few extra inches gives me more room to be more precise with my spraying.  I'm relying on my reaction time to pull my arm out quickly if I hear an air bag go boom or hear the suspension start venting :o) Crawling underneath ALWAYS calls for ramps and blocks.

I agree. I used to use the airbags to raise the coach to allow me to take a look underneath at something or drain oil. Last week while watching tv in the early evening I heard and felt a big bang and the rear of the coach immediately dropped to the bottom of the suspension. The cause was a blown rear axle airbag. The coach had been sitting for two days and was sitting level using the airbags. If I had been under the rear of the coach at the time I wluld have been crushed. I will never again go under the coach without jack stands for safety.

Mark,

This is related to my previous post. If my arm had been between the top of the tire and the coach when the bag blew I am sure I would have lost my arm. The bag split wide open and the coach dropped instantly and was resting on the tires.
