Engine Overheatin

I have a 2007 Inspire, Genoa (52029) with a 400  Cummins with engine brake.  I purchased the coach new and have over 71000 miles.  I have never had an engine overheating problem until today.  Today I was driving from Denver to Grand Junction (I-70), which required going up several high passes, and, of course, going down the steep other side.  I had no over heating problems going up the passes and no problems going down until about 40 miles from Grand Junction - this stretch had some gentle hills.    Suddenly the check engine light (CEL) came on, I lost power, and finally the engine shut down.  Pulled over to the side  and let it sit for about 10 minutes.  I turned it back on and things seemed OK and I took off - A/C was off.  The engine cooled down a bit but then started climbing again.  I shut it down, turned off the Engine brake and limped into a campground in Grand Junction.  I check radiator coolant - OK and engine oil - OK.

Up to today, I almost always drove the coach with the engine brake switch to "high".

In a few days I will be traveling some of the "back" roads going to Montrose, Canon City and back onto I-25 at Pueblo and there will be a few steep ups and downs.  I am concerned about overheating.  I'd sure like some advice.

I was having some problem with overheating on gentle grades last year.  Turned out that the radiator cap needed replacement so that the cooling system was pressurizing properly.

I had some overheating problems with my cumins 370 ILS.  Was getting a little warm.  I asked on this group, and someone told me to use the arrows on the trans and manual downshift before grade, and told me to stick around 2K Rpm...  I took his advice.  Worked great.    Not even a little warm....    I hope you have the same experience.

Doug - Bummer, and not fun when you are on the road.

We were going the other way, as we were going West towards Denver. But I blow an exhaust manifold gasket probably way back in California. I decided to have it addressed before climbing those I70 grades into Denver. I went to Rocky Mountain Cummins, and was very pleased with their service. (We had to replace the exhaust manifold and the gasket.) The shop rate is not cheap, but it was very competent care.

I mention that, if you want to have it looked at.

Could be a few things to check out:

-Can you hear your fan kicking into high? Possible your Fan Controller is out.
-Possible that the thermostat has gone bad on you.
-When was the cooling system last serviced? (A good flush, and a shift to an OAT based coolant, could help. I went with Final Charge.)

Those are my thoughts, as well as downshifting and keeping the RPM's up. But, sounds like you know that:)!

I have had a similar problem and in my case it was the Sauer Danfoss controller that regulates the amount of hydraulic fluid to your fan.  If you go to the back of the coach and crawl under neath the back end of the radiator on the bottom you will see a little box and a solenoid container mounted to the radiator.  If you have one connector that connects to a harness disconnect it and this will force the fan to go to high speed keeping the coach cool but using a little more fuel until a replacement can be found. If you fave two plugs leave the 2 pin connector attached and disconnect the other.  The fan will go to high speed.    Of course your coolant level could be low , too.  But I am sure you have checked the sight glass on your coolant tank.  If the level gets, too low you won't be able to start your coach.

There are several possible causes. One of the most likely is thermostats  are sticking.

I appreciate all the help that has been given but my 2007 Inspire, if it has an electrically controlled fan,  does not have a fuse  -  at least I cannot find one in the book that came with the coach nor can I find one looking at all the places where they might be found. The fan is side mounted so it is not run off the engine but I sure cannot find any electronics back in the engine compartment - short of removing a lot of stuff.  I crawled under the rear street side of the coach and there is a heavy metal rock shield  underneath the radiator, and it hides everything that is above it.  From the rear, the air filter and other stuff blocks everything but I can see the fan.  Last September I had the coolant system flushed and new coolant added.  Any more ideas will be helpful.

My inspire is a 2005, so I'm not sure if we have the same setup. However, on my coach the controller fuse is located in the outside compartment under the drivers seat. If you have two fuse boxes in there, one should be for your coaches 12 volt system. In that box, look to see if you have a wire number 84, if so that should be the fuse for your controller. You can verify be pulling this fuse while running your engine, your fan should default to high.  Good luck! RJ

Two weeks ago I posted a problem concerning overheating of my Coach and I received a lot of support.  I was in Grand Junction, CO and found a company - Diesel Services, Inc.(DSI) - that fixed my problem.  After careful evaluation of the entire cooling system they determined that the SauerDanfos Fan motor was defective.  We contacted Country Coach - Gregg, and he ordered a new fan - from UK, and four days later the fan motor was in our coach and we are back on the road.  DSI was exceptionally helpful and let us stay in their "yard" for 10 days with full hook-up while they were working on the problem.  I highly recommend DSI if you are in Grand Junction and have an engine problem.
