Cruise control failure 1998

My cruise control activation switch always worked. The, it began to sporadically fail. Now it fails more than it works. My diagnosis is that I have a short in the wiring within the steering column or a loose connection. I suspect this as sometimes I can get it to operate by "Jiggling" the switch lever. But if I operate my turn signals the control quits.
Now, What do I need to do to get into this wiring in the steering column? Do I need to remove the steering wheel and hub? What is the recommended procedure? I can not see any simple mechanical attachments at the column collar/shroud.
I am hoping that it is easier than I fear! Daron Hairabedian, 1998 Allure, 30226 With Cummins 330 HP, 8.3 L Mechanical engine.

I do not have an answer of you specifically. But getting down to the innards and possibly just doing a good cleaning with electric contact cleaner, and making sure all of the wires are properly attached, could pay dividends.

Assume this is a Smart Wheel? Used on many coaches besides CC. So, if someone else here does not have more solid answer for you, suggest you post on RV.Net or IRV2 under Class A section. Much larger population of owner's may yield some input.

So far, knock on wood, the only problem I ever have is sometimes the Cruise will drop out when climbing a steep hill. Though, I usually have the cruise off when hill climbing:)!

My only other phantom problem, is the sometimes shift from 6th down to 5th when going over rough road sections. Not all of the time, but suspect I have a communication channel (Harness, ground, damaged wire.) between the Cummins and Allison brains, that rough vibrations will sometimes cause to kick down a gear. (Not always 6 to 5, can be 4 to 3, etc. too. Just seems to drop a gear for a few seconds, then right back up.) This happens about once or twice a month while in travel mode:)!

Daron, I think you have King cruise control, if so ck ground by unit near your engine.  Jim Veen, '96 intrigue, #10299.

Thanks for that suggestion. Yes, I believe it is a King Controls unit. I looked in the engine compartment but, did not see the cruise controls. I may be looking in the wrong places or do not know exactly what I am looking for. Where is yours located? What does it look like? Black box or??

I tried to get it to work today on my run from Corning to Fresno. I was successful in catching the speedonlyonce! I am hop-scotching down to the Temecula area. Will be there in a couple of days and will have time to dig deeper.

Daron, my King cruise control is in a metal box about 4 x8x1 inch mounted on frame on passenger side.  I get to it by lifting bed and removing cover over engine.  It has a short wire ground to frame held in place with a screw and lock washer.  Jim Veen, intrigue 10299.
