Air Dryer Desiccant Cartridge Replacement options

I have been doing some research on the air dryer desiccant cartridge replacement  options, mine was last replaced 48,000 miles ago and too many years ago so I am now looking at replacing with either a remanufactured one or a new manufactured one. Prices are all over the map, the complete air dryer, new,  is over $500 (part number (065612), a remanufactured unit (part number 109477X) is over $300. And prices for the remanufactured desiccant cartridge only, (part number 10943X)  is found online for as cheap as $65 plus shipping and up to over $150. A newly manufactured cartridge, (part number 065624)  runs anywhere from around $130 to $300. I am not certain if there is any major quality differences between the remanufactured ones and the newly manufactured units.

My question is does anyone have experience showing if a remanufactured unit is as reliable as a newly manufactured unit and is it advisable to go with a complete new air dryer as opposed to just replacing the desiccant cartridge? I have a total of 98,000 miles on my mh.

I called Bendix about my dryer.  They told me that when u purge the dryer if you don't see evidence of water you need not change the desiccant. I changed mine when small amounts could be seen and it was still fine, but to my knowledge only the cartridge must be changed the dryer looks like it would last forever!  Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111

I think you left a number out on the rebuilt cartridge. Mine uses part number 109493X. If you use a genuine Bendix cartridge you will be good to go. They are as good as a new one. You might want to say away from the off-the-wall brands as problems have been reported with these.

With the time and mileage you reported I would replace it. Cheap insurance for the problems a bad cartridge can cause $$$.

Interestingly enough, in May of 2014 I requested that my air dryer cartridge be replaced and I was informed that the unit on my coach was not one that the cartridge could be replaced.  So, I had Redlands Truck and RV install a new (Bendix) unit with a replaceable cartridge.  Cost of the unit was $588.63 plus labor to do the job.  Now I plan to replace the cartridge every 2 years.

I just replaced my AD-IP Cartridge and Purge valve assembly.

I ordered the parts my self and had them delivered to my CAT dealer with no shipping charges as the distributor makes regular runs to the shops.

The Cartridge number for my C-9 was 109493CX and cost $75.81 with no core charge. I am under the impression that it is a genuine Bendix re-manufactured unit. I have be told by Bendix techs that the re-manufactured unit is as good as the new. The last time I replaced my Cartridge there was a core charge so I don't know what the deal is now.

I also replaced the Purge valve which should be part of the Air Dryer service. The part number for the Purge Valve Assembly kit for my C-9is KO22105K and costs $105.82. There used to be a rebuild kit for the Purge Valve but it was discontinued.

Moisture is the air release valve is the indicator of need for service but I still service mine every four or five years.

For what it's worth, I put the rebuilt Bendix unit, part number 109477X, on "will-call" at Pacific Truck Center in Coburg Oregon to make sure they had it in stock when I went to pick it up.  Their price was $463.93 less core return of $247.00 resulting in an out-of-pocket cost of $216.93.
 It was easy to pick up and take with me to the Peterson CAT shop in Eugene Oregon for installation and return with the core for the refund of that deposit.
 I acknowledge that some of the previously mentioned scenarios may be cheaper but this was the best cost versus hassle ratio for this time and place in my case.
