Problem solved but not how you may think.  On the messages page there are two little arrows pointing right and left just under the purple reply button.  Placing the cursor over those little arrows expands the page, pushes the ads out of the way and then the page with the two down arrows on the left side and header icons appears.  From there it works as advertised.  I guess many already have an expanded page with they access the forum.  I don't will begin figuring out how to do that.
