I have a Heartface 20D inverter and after 19 years it failed to work, I'm told the transformer is bad, and if you can find a place to fix it, get it repaired, because they were made like tanks. Anyone know of place that can fix them, so I don't have to buy a different make?

Mike,

Hi I'm an authorized repair service center for Magnum Inverters, also from the purchase of the Inverter repair shop I bought we have many parts for the Heart/Xantrex freedom inverters. The previous owner of the Inverter shop was one of the engineers from Heart, who trained me.

I don't think the transformer is what went bad, probably one of the boards... The FET and control is the most common board that fails.

Now here's my opinion/thought process.... Take it for what it's worth! J

To ship the Inverter to and from the repair shop will probably be $40 each way plus or minus. Minimum labor will probably be 1 hour ($85-$125) Once opened the tech will do a visual looking for blown FET's, burnt wires, blown fuse, etc.. If no seen issues then you change the control board, a lot of times that fixes it.... But if it doesn't fix it, then you change the FET board and that normally does the trick. So with those parts and labor it's probably in the neighborhood of around $600 to $700 plus the shipping costs, and the only warranty is what the repair shop will give you.

Now on the other hand you can buy a Re-Manned Magnum unit that is re-manufactured at the factory that comes with a 1 year warranty from them. I sell the re-manned units for much less then new obviously... My 2 most common units I sell are the modified & pure sine wave 2000watt units. The modified (ME2012) unit sells for $700 and the pure (MS2000) is $925, plus remote which is $212

Replacing in most coaches is a direct swap out, the units are almost the same physical size, the remote is the same size and the existing data cable if not damaged doesn't need to be changed.

So IMO replacing with a Magnum unit that only costs a little more but is a newer technology, is the way to go!

Again, just my 2 cents....

I certainly agree with Mikee on the Inverter Service Center. I dealt with them this Summer with an inverter issue and they are fantastic. It's probably one of the best companies I have ever used- great for support, tech questions and parts.

I had some intermittent issues with my Xantrex inverter in my 2002 Intrigue and hand carried the inverter it into Biobenefit Energy, a Xantrex authorized dealer. Paid a little extra for expedited service since we are full timers but got it rebuilt and back within 3 days. Yes it was a little pricy but I didn't want to change out remote units and wire routing to switch over to a different model or brand. I was also told that you have to add some plug adapters to the cable for the remote if you switch over to Magnum ... not that that should be a big deal. That was a year ago and no problems since.

Jim,

Thanks for the info I think you are correct, a new one maybe the better way to go. I know the only time I have a issue with mine now is when I flip the switch for house battery power, it will not convert over and makes a load humming noise. I have no issue with shore power or gen power and the batteries do stay charges from the inverter. I just do not get any power from the batteries.

Jim,

I will be buying a new inverter and will be looking at the magnum. With that being said since I had a Heart Face any idea if I will need to buy anything else other than a new inverter. Will everything else still from the old inverter run a different make.

Mike,

You might want to check these guys as they have very good prices on Magnum.

You will also need a new control panel for the Magnum.

Mike,

You'll need Inverter (obviously) and a remote. If the data cable from the inverter to remote is in good working order it will not need to be changed. The installer does need to look at the orientation and if needed the connector end may need to be changed on one end. Make sure that is figured out first because IF you have a reversed cable and you plug it in it'll take the control board out on the new inverter!!

Been there, done that! No big deal for me, as I just open up the inverter and replace the board in 5 minutes and move on with a few cuss words....

I'm always here to help!

Since the inverter does everything it is suppose to do except work when switching to straight battery power do you still think it may only be a board issue?

We just had to replace our Trojan T105 batteries after just one month short of four years old, do you think this normal? I think there might be something wrong with the inverter as the batteries were hot and boiling out the water. It is the original Xantrex inverter that came with the coach, don't know if this could be the problem, but think so. What would your thoughts be? Also, is there anyway to check to see if the inverter is working like it is supposed to?

We are at the outdoor resort of Palm Springs, would anyone know of any good repair outfits in the area?

Thanks,

Hi Ken: INNOVATIVE COACH WORKS was one of the original electronic supplier and installers at CC until they closed their doors. They have a location in Indio as well Junction City Oregon. Call 541.632.0585 and ask for Matt Rossiter or Noah Chamberlain at their Indio location. They are also at the FMCA rally in Indio this week.
