2000 Intrigue 36' - Ray Bensten

Yahoo Message Number: 104047
Met a very nice gent today, Ray Bensten, in San Diego. He stopped by to tell me he has his one owner 2000 Intrigue 36' One Slide with ISC350 is going to be put up for sale. Miles are somewhere in the 90's.

It has been garage kept this full time, and he said he's made many, many customizations over the years.

I like to feel I'm a good read of character, and Ray came across as a stand up guy. I believe him when he tells me the coach is in excellent condition. I asked some basic questions, and the answers reinforced this. Items like changing of to Transyn, OAT based cooling fluid, etc. - are good indications of his level of care.

I did a quick for his name on Google, and a picture of Ray and his coach came up. He was in a blog about RV'ing and Tool Boxes. Ray is quite the craftsman, as he had fabricated an aluminum tool box, to fit into the driver side front bay. Great attention to detail on this tool box. If he did the same attention to detail on his other mod's - this is a very unique coach.

In another stream, I saw many of the members for this Forum on same thread with Ray (He posted under his wife's, Patricia Besnten's handle.). Was wondering if anyone might have met Ray over the years in some of the CC functions he used to attend? And if so, your opinion on if I'm reading him right - as a meticulous owner?

(I have thought of one gent that may be just about reading to move into a DP. Will call Ray and go visit with him to see his coach next week. One to check it out for my friend, before mentioning it to him. And two, I really enjoyed my brief conversation with Ray and would really like to see some of the other mod's he made to this rig:)! 2000 is in the some off CC's best days of manufacturing, so even with one slide, if this coach is as creampuff as it sounds - it could make a great coach for someone.)

My best to all,

Smitty

I had the pleasure to walk thru this coach today, and it was as Ray described. Very impressive modifications made to this rig, both mechanical and interior. Ray is a hand on craftsman with 40 years of Jig & Die shop experience before he retired. If he ever reads this, I hope he takes this the right way - he did things 'Old School'. Do it right, and in doubt - build it stronger then you think it may need to be. All sorts of unique modifications for storage.

The interior looked new as far as condition. His parking space inside of his garage, includes a pit to get down and under the rear end. While I admit that I have not taken as good of care of my coach as I usually do, this is at almost 'show coach' condition. (And I'm talking the underneath.) Not a spec of dirt, or even signs of dried up water spots from driving down the road. He really has kept his in super condition.

Tires? Look good, but the one tire code I saw was 07 year, so it's time to factor tires. House AGM's age i forgot to ask him about, as well as chassis.

Anyways, my friend who came with me, is very tempted to try and make this work for him and his wife. They have parking for a 34' coach or under, and he has not way to make a 36' fit in... But, may talk to his FIL to see if they could possibly store each others coaches at each others home. FIL has a 30' coach, with room for a 45' rig.

Ray said he'll be putting this onto the San Diego area Craigslist and RVT probably the fist of the year. I did not ask about price, and he did not offer. From my now to conversations with Ray, he is proud of his rig (rightfully so), and I suspect he'll price accordingly. So this for the right person, would be ideal if they are into this classic era of Country Coaches, and willing to pay a bit more for the condition, condition, condition - and hopefully, would also appreciate and respect the modifications to this unit. It most likely will not be a bargain price, but for sure - that does not mean it won't be a 'bargain' for the right buyer with the right needs.

The dang thing is, I now have four or five modifications I will need to make to my rig - yep, copying some of the great storage ideas that Ray came up with...To do list is growing:)!

Best to all,

Smitty

Thanks, Smitty. It's so wonderful to read about how wonderfully kept and done this coach is. As folks who are always very curious about how other CC owners modify for storage, if you wouldn't mind describing some of the ones Ray has done, I'd be grateful. Thank you as always, Smitty.

Hi Mary,

Yeah, Ron seems to be almost OCD in his pride of all of his gear. His home shop is amazing too. He rebuilt a best of show many time winner 55 Chevy too, he has quite a few different skill sets.

Some of the mods I recall, he said somewhere between 75-85 modifications in all: > His engine access hatch, and engine area -Added insulation under the hatch, and under bed area, to reduce engine heat -Bult a smaller access panel within the hatch, to easily get in and lube the pac brake -He cut in a chrome louvered vent grill to the rear access hatch. Looks good, and heat escapes -He built a slash guard under the fan controller, -He extended a shield along the bottom of the fan, that really reduces dust blowing up (CC too pictures of what he did, and incorporated this into future models.) -He built sheet metal splash guards around the running gear joints, to keep fresh lube/oiil from being tossed up all over the surrounding area -The OTR heater rear circulation pump (he thinks he only has one in his 36' coach(?). He added a switch to turn off the power to the pump, until he wants heat up front.
-He built a drain tube with plug, to catch any dripping slobber area. Drains it once every six months.
-He closed off the bottom of his battery compartment, as he is running AGM's.
-He beefed up his rear hitch capability, to handle carrying a bike on back > He built a custom tool box in the rear (not front driver like I had thought) basement. Just great usage of space, and avery clean looking tool box.
He built a small 5" deep slide out shelf, that has on rollers attached to the rear side of one of second basement. This spans the full side of the coach. And he carries cleaning fluids, spray cans, and other smaller gear. Just slide it all the way out, an you have access to anything.
He built a slide out drawer, that he flushed out to be even with the bottom of the rail. about 6" of useable storage in an area that many people don't utilize the space due to the bulk head.
In one of the two large bays, I think the rear one, he built two slide out trays, retaining about a 6" wide area t to slide larger items, like his ladder. He also attached to the bottom of the rail, a 3" diameter storage tube that he carries his telescoping flag pole in.
On his mirrors, he added a top chrome mirror, making this now a three head mirror > Inside were TV's. Added storage spaces. custom corrian tops added to many areas. Like he replace the oak table with corrrian and added a slide out drawer underneath. He replaced the oak tops to the side boards next to he bed. Replaced the plastic bathroom sink with a one piece corrian top with embedded sink. Added corrrian splash guards to the kitchen counter. And more. He has bench table seating, and extended the depth of the storage area for enhanced storage. He cut in an access panel with finished door, to get to the rear of the water heater. He replaced the front landing carpet, with tile. (I still can't believe his carpet is not new, but he said nope, OEM!). He built an angled deadman foot rest to the left side of brake pedal, to rest his left foot on more comfortably while driving.
Outside, he has new custom painting accent to the side, and a mural on the back of otters laying on their back. (Forget the name of the gent who did this for him. Last name begin with N. Supposed to be well known.)

I've just scratched the surface. And just to be clear to all, I really do not know Ron that well, my second meeting and conversation with him yesterday. I really respect what he had done. If I were downsizing to a 36' coach today, I would really carefully consider a single driver slide only coach - that is how nice this unit is. The miles do not bother me, as I know it has been taken care of. He took delivery at CC for this, his second CC. And I also admit, that my first look at CC's were these classic sort of cream white units. With the plexiglass front bug shields. Such a classic look. (And yeah, he made mod's to too, to reduce bugs and stuff from getting tossed up behind it.)

Just a neat guy. When i see he has this out on RVT or Craigslist, I'll attach. Ron knew many of the old CCI gang, having been to several of the rallies over the years. He knew a few of the names I mentioned from this board. Probably knew more too, but he said he remembered faces better then names:)!

Best to you, and all,

Smitty

Smitty,

Wonder if your friend would like to take my 2000 and return it to it's glory days, condition wise?

I suspect Ray would chuckle at you, as much as he did me - when I offered to bring my coach over to him for a few months:)!

He seems to have many little projects going at once. Yesterday he was building little book houses for one of the neighbors. These are neighborhood book exchanges, out in from to a few volunteered homes.

If I get back over to his RV again, I'll take a few pictures of some of his mod's...

No it's not CC related, but here is a link I found to Ray's 55 Chevy in Hotrod.com. If you Google his name with a + 55 Chevy, other articles may come up. And looking at the attention to detail and out of the box thinking on how he approached this project on the 55 - is representative of the quality of work. Seeing how his 55 showed so well, I can see where he carried that skill set over to detailing under his coach too:)!
