Kitchen Sink Problem

Yahoo Message Number: 104160
Kitchen faucet leaks, in the past I've repaired, life time warranty from Kohler. May repair again. Wife would prefer a new faucet. Haven't been able to remove the faucet with the sink installed. It's a "single hole" unit with a 1.5" nut attaching it to the sink. Not a bunch of room under there! They don't make basin wrenches that big and probably wouldn't fit under there. Turns out that I have a tool fro removing element from a residential water heater that is for a 1.5" nut and the water lines will fit through the tool. It's 5" long so it's not long enough to clear the bottom of the sink and there is not much room to get any mechanical advantage in the room that's left. Talked to the local Kohler guy and he said the older faucets used a flanged nut that corrodes and is a real "B@#$" to get off. I've tried penetrating oil but not easy to penetrate. At this point I see two options.

Repair the faucet, assuming it's fixable.

Remove the sink so I can get a 1.5" wrench on the nut with some mechanical advantage. Possibility of damaging the sink (maybe).

Plugged the water lines so we've got H2O in the coach (less kitchen).

Talked to Keven before I knew about this problem. So Keven if you have any ideas let me know.

Anybody else have any suggestions. I've looked at extending the water heater tool but nothing easy pops up. Will decide what to do this week so we can get back on the road in January.

they make large jaws for the better basin wrenches that can take care of your problem... Rigid, etc, not home depot...

I will be watching this post. As luck would have it, my faucet was completely broken off at the wand. I looked in 3 states on the way home at most Lowes and HD with no lock finding that wrench for removing that 1 1/2" nut. I even tried some smaller hardware stores with no luck. As you said there is not much room beneath the sink to get a wrench on. Good luck.
Let us know how you get it repaired. Mine will cost me more, by the time I get the repairs done to the coach that caused the faucet to break.

Hi Judy & Joe,

If you have not found a good solution yet, You may want to try these wild ideas:
1. Would a Dremel high speed rotary tool with a long shaft grinding tip or cutting disc fit in the area? If so, you could grind or cut through the nut then pry apart to remove. if no room to fit then some of these tools offer an accessory a flex extension, power take-off cable for longer reach.
2. Would a long shank drill bit reach the nut? You could drill through the nut in a couple of spots enough to pry it in half.
 Good luck.

Joe,

Just a thought, can you weld an extension on the 5" shank to clear the sink basin ? OR Maybe hose clamp a smaller piece of right angle stock, long enough to clear the basin on the shank and then use an adjustable wrench or drill holes in that, to put something through to get some leverage. I have used a right angle along side a pipe before, welded and/or clamped for an extension. You can even use two pieces running along side each side of the shank and then get vise-grips on both pieces where you have some clearance. Its worked for me in the past. Just an idea, may not work in your situation. But, good luck and take care.

I'd think about using a Dremel with cutting wheel to cut it off flush from the top! May take several cuts, but should then just drop out. Good luck

Coincidentally, my son (a plumbing contractor) put a new kitchen faucet in my 2001 Allure last week. It is a pull out gourmet spray. While mine did not have the 1 1/2" nut, he did say that a basin wrench like this one at amazon would work.

My new Delta he installed...

The 31180 Ridgid basin wrench has a capacity 1.25 in to 2.50 in according to the Ridgid literature that I have.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, all had merit! Got it out. Looked at the installation drawing and there was a fiber washer between the bottom of the sink and the flanged nut (hoped it was installed). Squirted some penetrating oil on the the nut and let it soak over night. Used the "Water heater tool" with a screwdriver as mechanical advantage (about 8" long) had someone hod the faucet and I impacted the screw driver under the sink. It did com loose. Now we are looking (wife actually) for a faucet that has a 2" base that will fit on the sink without cutting the counter top. Found some Delta's and a few Kohler's that will work. Make the decision today, probably need to order.

Did find a basin wrench that looked strong enough to remove the nut, had a handle on the bottom big enough for adequate mechanical advantage. That was going to be my next step.

Will post a picture when I get it installed. Again tnx!! Judy wants the pull down similar to the one installed in the Allure!! Looks good John and Carol!!

Costco has what looks to be a very nice solid brass with steel finish Hansgrohe with pull out sprayer for $259.00. We've been eyeing it for our coach...

Judy found a Kohler Cruette pull down in oiled bronze that she liked. Has a base less than 2", installation looks good for our application. Ordering today from a local kitchen store, price was good compared to online will be here tomorrow.

If the Costco faucet will work in your coach, you will find it to be very user friendly. We have one in our home in Nevada and also one in the fishing cabin in Oregon. The faucet in the motor home is still working well, so will have to wait to make any changes there,

We just installed this one from Home Depot, We really like the Delta faucets because they have a very strong magnet in the pulldown sprayer unlike some other brands that depend on a weighted hose to retract. This fits model has a 2" base and fits nicely in the cutout.

We have spent the last two weeks in the RV and absolutely love this upgrade. We really like the convenience of the pull down compared to the old pull out model. It looks classy against the stainless sink and the sprayer is awesome. Makes it easy to fill the coffee pot too.

Jim,

when you say it has a 2" base, does that mean that the portion that fits down through the hole is 2" or the upper part that sits on the sink has a 2" part? I believe that the hole in our sink is only 1 1/2".

Base is the outside dimension (diameter) of the part that sits on the sink or counter surface. In out intrigue the counter top encases 1/2 of the base. If you have a larger base the semicircle would require enlarging. We found very few faucets that had a 2" base. We found a Kohler that fit the bill and my wife likes it!! Will post a picture when I get it installed. The Delta looks really good and we considered it. Judy decided on an "Oiled Bronze" so that's why we went to the Kohler Cruette. Also the Sales associate was a real Fox!!

Dave,

You are correct, The base of the faucet that sits on the sink top is 2" so it doesn't fall through, I believe that all current sinks are the same and have a 1 1/2" hole. Many of the older CC's have a sink cover with a cutout that will only accept a 2" base. The first faucet that we purchased had a tapered flare on the base and would not fit.

In our coach our Stainless coffee pot sits on the counter just to the right of the faucet so I just mounted it with the control handle on the left with the hot and cold reversed under the sink. Now pull towards you for cold and push away for hot. This seems very natural although it could be plumbed either way.

At home we have a Delta with touch control, after two weeks I still find myself touching this one by habit. It's tough getting old!
