Hurrican Heater

Hi, we have a 2000 magna 36'and the heater is not working, wont stay running, flame out white smoke, then a shut down run flame out== air in line. Has any ran a new line back to tank, on a 2000 magna and what kind of job was it. Thanks Charles 5886

Had my service shop do fuel line replacement three years ago on my '03/'04 Hurricane system. They said it's quite a job, but fuel filter has been slower to turn black since. You should expect to do a "tune-up kit" on the furnace as well. Contact Hurricane to order. They have been very helpful over the years.

Have you opened the return fuel valve on top of the furnace. I leave mine cracked about 1/4 to 1/2 turn to allow air to return to the tank. Might help you.

Jeff, what are you referring to about the fuel filter (I assume in the Hurricane) turning black? What does this have to do with anything?

Also, Jeff, perhaps you don't know since you didn't do it, but what exactly did the fuel line replacement to the Hurricane involve specifically? Where does the line run?

I had the same issue and symptoms twice in the past 4 years. Both times it was related to the fan motor for combustion at the furnace. The first time, the fan motor had an intermittent contact on the connector to the motor, so the motor didn't always run. When I was trying to chase the wiring and wiggled a connection, the fan motor started and then the problem was obvious.

The second time was related with the same symptoms, only it was the carbon brush to the motor was intermittent. I took both brushes off the motor and blew out the carbon that was in the holder and reinstalled. That was 2 years ago and it has been working fine since. It is not hard to do, but you need to remove the covers and trace the wiring.

The first time, I contacted the factory (as I remember, in the Vancouver area of Canada) and he was very helpful in where to look and related symptoms.

Might want to check the igniter for the furnace. I had the same problem that you are experiencing and found that my igniter went bad. You can check it after you remove it by placing one wire on a negative terminal and one on the positive terminal of a battery.

Charles here,5886 2000 magna. The heater will run some times for 1 to 1.5 hr or less some times, than flame out, try to restart again, restarts and run some more tnen stops and white smoke comes out and red lite comes on inside at the switch location in bed rm,i then can turn off and back on and its starts all over again,i will check for a air leak .thanks charles

I had the same symptoms on my Hurricane. When I called they were very helpful in talking me through all of the checks. Mine turned out to be the circuit board. However, before replacing the fuel line I would try switching the incoming with the return fuel line. One guy on this forum did that and it worked fine. If that doesn't solve the problem give the Hurricane people a call.

The Hurricane fuel filter turning black is an indication of debris from the inside of the fuel feed line as the ULSD fuel attacks it. Replacing the feed line from the fuel tank will greatly reduce this debris. Clogged filter can give poor Hurricane burn in my experience over the last 12+ years with mine.

The line ran from the fuel tank, up along the frame rails, and down to the filter and furnace. I am not agile enough to get into the basement compartments, remove the ceiling panel in each one, and drag the line through, but grateful that there are folks that would. Good luck.

I ran a new fuel line to my Hurricane and generator so it can be done. Took a couple days (10 hrs?) Hurricane runs smooth and steady now.

The heater was very temperamental and flamed out alot. The lines at the fuel tank were deteriorating really bad because they were exposed to the elements. I initially cut the bad stuff (line) off at the tank and spliced in some new line as a temporary fix while on the road. This actually helped a lot until I had time to do thewhole job. One way to verify you have a fuel line issue is to get some new line and a seperate gas/diesel container and hook it up to the Hurricane and see how it will run. I used the same length test line as what's installed on coachand tried to elevate spare gas/diesel container at close to the same level as coach tank. Mine ran flawlessly for three days doing this test. I don't have specs handy of the fuel line I bought on line, but it was decent quality stuff. Not the best (most expensive) but better than what was in there.
I also had to cut a fuel tank access panel on the forward wall of the first storage bay. I'm told that some coaches already had this access panel from the factory. If you do the generator, note that the feed line is bigger in diameter than the return line. 5/16 vs 1/4 as I recall, but check readings on side of hose. Good luck, Hope you solve your issues.

Hello, just put a temp hose to our hurrican heater to see if it keeps running, so far ok.I guest soon i will be running some new lines to it, has anyone run new line in a 2000 magna, how was it. Just dont now yet how to get to tank thur electric bay. Thanks Charles 5886

Sorry, but that is not a good idea. The fuel feeder lines are located at close the botton of the fuel tank, and the return lines at the top of the tank!
