Starting problems

The episode last happened over a year ago but yesterday morning the darn coach would not start...Batteries fine...Using the booster switch did no good. There was power to the solenoid and starter. Banging on the solenoid accomplished nothing...Roadside assistance to the rescue! He made the same tests and then connected jumper cables and even that did not start the coach! He then grabbed a larger hammer and gave some good whacks to the solenoid while the cables were connected...YES!!! Darn beast! The serviceman thinks the starter is bad. My question: where does one get a new starter? I asked at Napa but they said they do not carry large ones like I need. Is this a Cummins item? Any large truck shop? Idea as to prices so I do not get fleeced? Thanks for the help.

Before you replace the starter, try what I just had to do. Take off the smaller gauge wire on the starter solenoid (the piece that looks like it's piggy-backed on the starter motor). Use emery paper and clean the lug and the lock nuts that hold it on. Mine was actually loose, but all the contact areas needed to be cleaned. My symptoms were exactly the same as yours and it appears to have fixed my problem - I was sure I was looking at a new starter.
I believe this wire is what actually fires the solenoid that energizes the starter motor.

I'm on starter number three, Cummins ISL 400. Each time the starter has been replaced under warranty, thank goodness. Cummins charges about $500.00 for the starter.
I've gone about 4000 miles on the present starter with no problems ----yet. I too, used mechanical agitation with a large hammer on the starter when they were acting up.
Cummins claims there has been a design change, you might check with them, you didn't say which engine you have.

Mike, talk to the guy at the Cummins shop in Terra Haute, Indiana. I have a '99 Allure and Easter of '03 my starter did the same thing.
Cummins dealer said that it was under warrenty but later told me it was not and that the cost was $1,000.00. Somehow I got a hold of this guy in Terra Haute( I believe his name is John) and he told me that the starter was warranted by Cummins for the 5 year 100,000 miles and that he had replaced a bunch at no cost. He also got mine taken care of.

I have a 98 Intrigue with I believe is an ISC 325hp I do know is 8.3L. I am having problems when I turn the key engage the starter. I can hear something clicking when I go to start the engine but the starter motor does not turn over. I thought it may be the starter solinoid so I replaced it. It worked fine, started first time every time. We took our maiden voyage to Connecticut and back to Athens, Ga. with no problems starting. Now its acting up again. Sometimes it takes as many as 10 tries to get the starter to engage. There is no corrosion on any of the battery terminals but I am gonna brush them nice and clean and see if that helps. I'm open to any other suggestions anyone else may have. I have also noticed that the "Wait To Start" light does not stay on but for about 3-5 seconds. It used to stay on much longer than that.
