annoying bang in AV cabinet

Inside the A/V cabinet above passenger seat, I have a loose metallic piece banging on a stereo metal box as I drive down road. Unfortunately, it is not an obvious loose cable banging on outside of box, it is something metallic inside one of the four stereo/AV boxes in the cabinet. So I need to pull out all of the boxes and open them to find the culprit. They seem to have about 100 cables (or more) plugged in the back (includes the Key Digital flash matrix switch box). Ugggg... I just bought some cable labels to help with task. Maybe a photo or two. Any other suggestions? Have any of you done this before, or had this noise?

Hi Greg,

It seems to me that if all the components are working properly, I wouldn't start by removing them from the system to open them. If you take them out, you could probably shake it to see if anything rattles.

It seems more likely that one of the components is vibrating while the coach is moving and hitting some structural member. Are they in a location where a passenger could get to the system to push/move on each component, or just listen for the rattle while on the road?

Don, do you have the over-the-air antenna on the roof just above the banging sound? Mine would bag in the wind until I secured it.

I can take a look at that. Did yours make a loud bang? I would think the roof insulation would dampen it some. Mine seems very loud bang near passenger seat.

At speed the wind would lift the bat wing antenna resulting in the bang when it came down. I wrapped a bungy around it, ending the bang. However, on my coach the antenna is in a different position. By the way I rarely use that antenna.

I think you may be right Lee. Thinking back, I believe the banging started after they stripped and resealed the roof... Maybe they got the OTA antenna, or something else up there off kilter... I will check it out today, thanks.

Yes that was my thought, just remove each one and shake it to see if there is a loose part inside. Unfortunately we have already done all of the pushing and prodding we can going down the road, without success. There wouldn't be any part of the slide out, high by that cabinet that could make a banging noise, could there? It seems like it is coming from the rear of cabinet above passenger seat near slide out, but the slide out there is just smooth wall.

Make sure it lowered all the way and facing the right direction so it rests in it's little saddle.

They may have raised it when working on the roof and didn't lower it all the way.

I found it! It ended up being an antenna cable that had been unplugged from a Sirius Sat radio head in a cabinet near the Stereo/AV cabinet. The noise was transmitting itself through the wood, sounded like it was coming from a different location. Of course, I found that at the end. I looked all over roof, everything was fine, actually the OTA antenna is towards the rear of the coach on a Magna. And those stereo components, the boxes are really in there, I am glad I didn't have to remove them, but everything was tight and secure, they aren't going anywhere. Phew, feel better now... Thanks for the help guys.
