Banging sound on roof is back

I thought I had resolved a banging sound above the passenger seat, but I have not. I do know, it is not anything from the stereo cabinet above passenger seat, or anything to do with the slide out. It is a banging sound from the roof, metallic sound, and it is near the mount for the patio awning. The shop had removed the two patio awnings, to strip and reseal the roof and awning brackets. I have had this banging sound since I got it back. Does anyone know how those awning brackets mount to the roof? I sure hope some clamp underneath the fiberglass roof where the awning bracket connects came off and is banging around inside my fiberglass roof! I have looked at everything up there, and it looks fine and feels tight on the outside. I extended and retracted the awning a couple times, and it works fine, but when I drive the coach I still hear the bang on a moderately bumpy road, typical freeway. Anybody seen this before? I am really worried about a repair having to be done underneath my fiberglass roof. I don't see how one could gain access without cutting a big hole in the roof!

Greg;

I had the same problem. In my case it was only at speed on an inner-state and it was usually worst in a cross wind. It turned out to be the slide topper for the front slide. It would catch in the wind and stretch out and then bang back onto the side of the slide. I finally figured it out by adjusting the mirror on the passenger side so that I could look at it when it stretched out.

I had the problem very intermittently for almost a year and then it got worse while crossing Kansas in a big side wind a year ago. It finally ripped the rivets off and I had to bungee it to the roll-up frame and limp to a repair facility. They removed all of the rivets and replaced them with new ones and hI haven't had the problem since. Cost about $350. I'm not sure what the fix might be before the rivets rip out. Perhaps bungee cords when traveling in big wind?

Try driving with the right mirror tilted way up so you can see the slide topper. I'll bet you'll see it stretched out just before the bang.

I had same problem with front slide topper on driver. Gerard bolted a piece of angle iron to topper which helps clamp down topper when it is retracted--Problem Solved

I had the same noise which Gerard repaired at a rally on all 4 slide covers. The covers Are held down with strong magnets and mine were replaced with larger magnets The Slamming noise caused by cross winds lifting up the coves is gone. Bob. 06intrigue 12047

Thanks for all the help. I spent some time up near the roof line today, and I see what you guys are talking about. The topper on the slide out does have the magnet holding it, although the one on the D/S seemed to roll up tighter, and fit better than the one on the P/S, where the noise is. The magnet seemed to hold pretty well, but I don't know in a high wind. I did find something that may be causing the bang. The little awning over the steps was just a tad loose. I could rock it about 1/16", and that is exactly the spot where the noise is. I could kind of get a bang out of it. The awning sits in an aluminum rail, and it looks like 2 self tapping bolts keep it tight. It doesn't look like that solid of a design. I put a little fiberglass shim in the crack ( a detail paintbrush handle, tapered) and tapped it in to see if that stops the bang. I also found a whip antenna on the D/S twisted so that it could hit the big rails on the roof, but they are fiberglass, so I doubt that is the bang, but I straightened it so it won't hit anything. I will test drive it tomorrow and adjust my mirror to watch that topper, and let you guys know.

I'm virtually certain that it is the topper. Just bangs in high winds. The best way to stop it is to install stronger magnets (of stay out of the wind :)

I found the cause of the banging sound above the passenger's head. It was 2 loose slide out bolts. These are the 1/4" bolts (3/8" socket used) that hold the slide out brackets to the coach wall. The loose ones were on the top bracket near passenger. I tightened them some, and the noise went away, although it sort of came back a little at end of test drive. I suspect they are loosening a little again. I plan to try and put some blue thread locker on the threads, and tighten them again tomorrow. I will also do the other 3 brackets attaching to wall ( upper and lower brackets, front and rear of the slide, each bracket has 4 bolts). I wonder if these are Grade 8 bolts which can withstand about 12 ft-lbs of torque? Anybody know, or tightened these up before. I would really hate to break a bolt there, it is difficult access. I am using about a 2 ft extension on socket to reach the bolt.

I fixed the banging sound!!! It was one of the big scissor members for the slide out, located behind the passenger seat. There were a couple loose bolts (holding entire slide out mechanism to side of coach) and a loose bearing up near the top of one of the scissor arms. That bearing has a 1/2" pin with a few plastic washers. It was all very stiff and dry. When I pulled and pushed on the scissor arm, that bearing would "tick" and it transmitted the sound through the scissor arm. That arm is huge, 2 X 4 inch channel iron and acted like an amplifier. It was like somebody hit the metal arm with a hammer. Bang! Anyway, I sprayed some good penetrating oil and white lithium grease into all the joints and bearings, tightened all the bolts, and it is pure quiet now driving down the road. One of the worst parts of the job was hooking back up the spring loaded accordion shade behind the passenger seat which hides all of this hardware. You have to stand on your head and reach way in the cabinetry and moldings to reattach stubborn clips. I hate those stubborn window shade clips, especially when you can't see them, do it all by feel.... Anyway, job is done. On to the next! Thanks to the forum for all the help and support!
