Slides misbehaving from time to time

Yahoo Message Number: 105687
We have an 04 Allure 40' with two driver side slides, 31017.

Have three questions regarding them:

1) The front slide, this the deep slide, while coming back in, will stop just as it is getting over what I call the initial retraction where it raises up a bit. If I try to continue bringing it in, nothing happens. I have to start to extend it, stop it quick, and then it will come in and usually come in all the way without a problem. This has been a problem off and on, for I'd say 1/3 of of the retraction times over the last 25-30 usages.

2) About two months ago. The rear slide will not extend when we push the button. After reading other posts about slides behaving badly, I tried the go start to extend the front slide, and see if it gooses the rear. This does seem to get it to go out. I'll go the front, start to extend, stop it about a foot out. Then go the rear and the rear slide will extend as normal. Never have a problem coming in. This has happened 5-7 times.

3) My wife pointed out that our front slide is now leaving a larger indentation in the carpet. Hardly used to leave any track at all, now the slide end toward the rear, is leaving a pretty good track. Wondering if this is something that has come out of adjustment? Or an indication of a roller having a problem?

Note: Some of this is a repeat from another thread, but wanted to identify all of the slide behaviors as they have developed.

TIA, and best to all,

Smitty

Did some old email surfing and confirmed our Sept 2003 built, 2004 model, coach number 31017 has electric Power Gear slides. So will thank the nice gent from HWH when he calls back.

Based upon that update, if anyone has any thoughts on what to look over for the intermittent problems, would be appreciated.

My wife reminded me that we had had a few times when we stopped, where the HWH Leveling System had a Red Light dash error condition. And I think I recall hearing that the brain of the HWH and Slide mechanisms are sometimes interfaced?

I had two problems going on with that for the last few months. 1) I would leave the Tag in the up condition (A Duh! moment when I found this:)!). 2) I had the Parker Air Drier get stuck in the open position, taking some scientific finesse tapping to clear the crud out enough for the shutoff valve to engage.

Very possible, that the times we had trouble getting the rear slide to go out, that I also had had the error condition on the HWH system. Mentioning this, in case someone knows that if they might be interconnected.

Best to all,

Smitty

we had the same intermittent slide problems on both slides.

Check the electrical connections in the passenger side aft electrical bay. The last bay on the passenger side. Our electrical connections were loose!!

We paid someone to bypass the limit switch on the front slide. Wish we hadn't done that. Our brother in-law used a meter to trace the problem to that bay. Where the wires connect with screws, ours were loose.

Fixed both slide out problems. Also check the wires at the slide motor.

There is also a large fuse at the motor on each slide. It's large and silver. Kevin Waite knows which one it is because we bought one from him. Don't see how that could cause an intermittent problem tho.

Other things to check: the slide switch where you press to extend or retract the slides. Also if the battery is low they won't work. We turn on the ignition key when we put extend or retract the slides, or we have the engine running.

Our HWH has nothing to do with the slides since we have the Power Gear slides too.

One other thing that may affect the slide is the parking brake has a sending unit? You can't extend the slides without the brake being engaged.

Thanks for the homework!!! All logical items to check, and I've had some work done in the back compartment adding the FASS Fuel Pump and also on our MidNite Classic 150 controller. Who knows, some could have knocked something loose. Or just good old vibrations running down the road.

Will separate the Power Glide from the HWH Leveling as the sound like two different opportunities for troubleshooting...

And I did catch Kevin Waite as he was driving, don't know if he could hear me well or not, but he was breaking up some on my end. I called him about what is the best thing to use to clean the front slide gear and pulley like wheels. And then lubricate. (Going to use either electrical cleaner or brake cleaner to de-curd everything. Then silicone spray to help lubricate. Will then run the slide in/out multiple times to see if perhaps the front slide has enough debris buildup to cause resistance and the motor shut down for protection. That is an easy thing for me to do, and should be done again aways. (Some good dust storms in Yuma the last few months, so for sure could have added more crud up in the running gear of the big slide.)

If I do find a part that seems bad, I'll toss Kevin another call of replacement.

Oh, I also emailed former CC owner Don Seager, as he had a coach very similar to ours. He has always been so nice to share his knowledge with all us. He responded, with some good tips too. Great that former owners still help the CC gang:)!

Best to you, and all,

Smitty
