Resource For Road Conditions

What resources do you use for navigating roads in a large motorhome?  Is there anything out there just for RVers?  Is there a book, website, or even an app that consistently steers your big rig clear of potentially dangerous situations.  Sometimes we consider shortcuts but we're just never sure of the road conditions.  A few low overpasses and no-shoulder curvy roads has scared us enough.  Even wondering about someone to call that could tell us about the driveability of certain roads for RVers.  All suggestions welcome! Thanks!

We use Copilot app on our iphone for GPS. It uses GPS and works even without cell service. It has an RV setting. We've been using it for 2 years and are happy with it. It also lists campgrounds but we don't use it for that. We also use it in our toad, just change the setting to auto.

For planning I use Google Maps. I put in the start and the final destination then add stops every 3-5 hours.
Once I get the stops I look for campgrounds on http://www.woodalls.com you have to put in the city. Then sort by distance and filter by big rig if you want. Once I select 2 or 3 campgrounds I check those on http://www.rvparkreviews.com

as we move from location to location I input the next address in the CoPilot app. This process works the best for me.

We don't like to "wing it" to find nice RV parks. I also use the Walmart Rand McNally Atlas for backup if the routing looks funny or if we want to avoid major cities. The atlas contains all the Walmart locations.

If you go to amazon.com and put in GPS for RVs you will find what I think you are looking for.  Rand McNally puts it out.

I got the Rand McNally 720 Truck GPS, 7" screen. I also bought some cheap rubber iphone holder to hold the unit on the dash. The dash mount holder Rand McNally sells looked too big and bulky. You enter the size and weight of your rig, and it keeps you on the right roads, and correct lane too.

We love the Garmin 760RV. We change the setting to auto when we are using the tow. My wife even uses it on the motorcycle.

Add in the Western and Eastern Mountain Directory, to check your route ahead. If you see some warnings that make you pucker in advance, you can alter your course.

Also on the theme of staying safe while traveling, check some of the weather app that provide weather alerts. Weatherbug is one popular one.

And regardless of the GPS in use, do review your course by a good old Road Atlas Printed map, to do a sanity test on the routings... (GPS's are getting better, but way too often you hear stories of wayward directions:)!
