Replacing Air Units

First post.....1998 Country Coach 40' Intrigue Wisteria.....been a fan for many years...now an owner. .

Both air/heat pumps are original the thermostat is the 4 button Dometic unit. We are planning a summer trip to Texas . We would like to change out both units before our trip. I know there are remote controlled fantastic fans are there any remote controlled ac units ? Being a 1998 with an analog system in place main question the existing data cable from the a/c to the thermostat will this be compatible or plug and play with a new a/c unit. I plan on replacing the thermostat ? I am hearing good things about Coleman units ..Made in the USA and bad about Dometic made in China ..

My friend has 3 Coleman ACs on his 43' Winnebago and he had major issues with them last summer. The motor that turn the fans broke loose from the mounts on two ACs in 98 degree weather. This destroyed the unit when the fan blades got tangled up with other AC components. The motor base was merely "glued" to the unit, I was told and No bolts used to secure the motor.

From what my RV man said. Dometic is no better!! What is a man to do if he needs AC'S REPLACED??

All I can say is go to a dealer you can trust and have an extended service contract on the new air and the installation. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Got two Coleman's on a 1995 Dream that still work fine, Got three Dometics on the Prevost which is a 1994, one out of the thee still work. The problem is that Dometic has changed their design.I believe they were sold to Atwood Mobile products. Change is very seldom good!!

Yes, right now we are leaning on running them until they drop. I am going to pull the thermostat off and clean everything up with contact cleaner and start looking for a replacement 4 button duo therm thermostat.

yes, mine are working great, the rear one will click three or four times then start not every time. What I wrestle with is putting money into old units 18 years old--------

Michael - I had the same issue with the buttons on the 4 button thermostat. I saw a thread on the I2RV forum on the subject that led me to a fix and my thermostat is now working like new. I was getting ready to either update to the 5 button or send my 4 button to the guy in Colorado that repairs the 4 button units for just over $100. Instead I replaced the buttons myself at a total cost of $8 including shipping. Below is the info from IRV2. If you are capable of soldering it is an easy fix.

"My problem with the thermostat was the erratic performance of the 4 buttons, to change mode, temperature, zone, etc. The problem I had with the device was with the 4 little tactile switches; I guess they got tired.

I found that you can buy the switches from US - Electronic Components Distributor | Newark.com and they are $1.06 each. They are part number 19C6398; this is Newark's SKU number. Outside of Newark the switches are from ITT/Canon and the official part number is PVA1OAH1. Newark can be reached at 1-800-752-9279 or you can order on the Internet"

New switches installed and tested. Got them from Mouser Electronics part number 611-PVA1OAH11.2NV2 and were a whopping $1.01 each. Back in business!

I bought mine from Mouser (local company) and they were a perfect replacement. If you don't have a $5 desolderer it's worth the purchase to help in getting the old switches off the board. If you are someone that works on electronic boards it is a 5 minute job. I'm not and it took about an hour total.

Sounds like start cap is weak. On my S&B I have replaced both start and run caps. Not to expensive and pretty easy.
