What is Best Replacement In-Motion Satellite Syatem?

Yahoo Message Number: 106030
My 2004 Allure came with TracStar but it has now quit working and I find out TracStar is our of business. I use DirecTV on the road and at home. I need one simple to operate and reliable. TracStar lasted 12 years, which seems pretty good to me.

What do you experienced RVers recommend as a replacement in-motion satellite system?

Appreciate your help,

Best choices are either RF Mogul or Wineguard. Wineguard a bit cheaper, RF Mogul great support. Your choice.

Depends on what receivers you are using. (SD or HD)

We're getting a Winegard G2 (not in-motion) from Sats2Go in Houston at their recommendation based on our needs and the type of receivers we have. We have basic SD receivers. He will remove the TracStar, prep the roof for the new antenna and install the new one on the 19th.

Our TracStar slowly quit working, and the fellow who takes care of repairs on our RV replaced it with Winegard in motion satellite called the G4. Works well, but only one channel at a time, so only tape the channel we're watching. It works a little differently than our old one. When we stop somewhere, it makes a fair amount of noise before it gets locked in I guess, and it's 2-4 minutes I think of that. Works well though.

I just replaced my TracStar with a Winegard Travel'r pop-up HD dish coupled with Direct TV, really satisfied with it, it's fantastic! We never watched the satellite when traveling over the road anyway.

Had a few of the DirecTV Winegard open array HD antennas on my 07 Allure traveling the United States and they have been fantastic no problems only thing I had to replace was the RF cables because it went up and down so many times the only other problem is tornadoes tend to rip them off the top of the couch easier than a dome.experienced that one time going down the road in outside of San Antonio Texas

I have been using the Winegard Travler for several years - replaced the semi useless kingdome unit. Like the ithers said, the Travler is not in motion but I can't see why I would want to watch TV when travelling through all the spectacular scenery we pass through. But the Travler will lock onto all three satellites, works almost flawlessly in even the heaviest rainstorms, and it's a one button push setup when we arrive at a new location. I couldn't be more pleased with it.

We just dealt with this last week. I purchased a coach that had both the trackstar original coach equipment AND an RF Mogul dish. The former owner had it set up so the trackstar would provide signal to a Direct TV box when the coach was in motion, but not HD signal and the RF Mogul would provide HD TV Signal when the coach was parked. When I bought the coach, the systems were disconnected and the Direct TV Boxes were gone. I pulled the TV out, replaced all the RGB Cables with HDMI and a new receiver, walked into the local Direct TV Retailer and bought service and then hooked it up to the RF Mogul System. Works Great!! Carlo at RF Mogul was an excellent resource. While I was at it, I pulled all the old RGB TV Cables, Optical Cables, etc, etc and replaced with a single HDMI cable going to the front TV. Replaced the 2007 vintage receiver with a new blue tooth capable reciever (so we can stream Pandodra or anything else), new Blue Ray DVD, Apple TV (for streaming movies from an iPad) and XM Radio. THe next project is to replace the Pioneer ARIN (sp?) In Dash radio. Nothing works on it except the back up camera. If anyone has any experience replacing theirs, starting with how to remove it from the panel, let me know!

We purchased a 2007 Intrigue and twice have had issue with leveling on a sloped parking area. I get that at 42 feet, the distance between airbags is longer and therefore any slope that the coach is on will fall more than a shorter coach. I reviewed the documentation pretty thoroughly and cant find any indication of how much slope is too much. I cut some 2x10" Green Treat Boards and driving the coach up on 1 or 2 boards stacked can help but it would be nice to know how much front to back slope is allowable. The slides blink caution when the coach cannot level. Can you still extend the slides? if so it would be reallly nice to know how much slope is okay (eg. not recommended but okay) or is perfectly level the only acceptable way to extend the slides. SInce its a quad slide coach, not extending the slides makes for cramped quarters.

I removed my Pioneer dash radio to install a Tranzit Blu Bluetooth behind it, ties into radio, enables Bluetooth on my 06 Magna. On the Pioneer radio, the little black frame pops off, and then use the special Pioneer radio removal tools (I bought on ebay) to release spring locks, and pull radio out.

Hi Jim  and Jona. My coach was on the CC assembly line 3 behind yours (see my signature at the bottom of this post). We're almost twins.

One concern will be your Norcold frig, if you still have it. The  ammonia frig does not like to be off level so you should be less than 1 degree off. Use a 'level app' on you phone to monitor.

Second, don't keep pumping up the air bags trying to level, you could pop a shock.

Third, which should go first, don't park in a very off-level site. You can also move around in the site trying to find a more level spot; use the level app to monitor. I usually ask at registration for the most level site.

Hope you got the big owner's box of manuals, etc. eMail me if you have a need.

Hi Jim,

It sounds like you have done about the same thing I have done with our A/V equipment and the new Denon amp with Bluetooth works great for the AV setup. I also replaced our Pioneer AVIC in-dash stereo/GPS/backup camera with a Kenwood Stereo (KVT-7012BT) with Bluetooth and the motorized screen for the backup camera - works great and a direct fit. I use a separate Garmin GPS on a suction cup mount on the drivers side window because as I started researching in dash GPS it seemed having a separate GPS had better info and I like to have the rearview camera on all the time and not competing with the mapping.

On our 2005 Magna I had to remove the 2 bottom screws in that portion of the dash and open up the radio compartment - it popped out from two clips on the top. Then sort through the wires and use the same wires as the old radio for the new one. Removing one and replacing the other was as easy as using the tool that came with the new one to pop off the trim plate and remove 4 screws. The beautiful thing with this new setup is backing up somewhere, my wife takes her phone and we can talk while I'm using the hands free and I can see her in the backup camera... And the sound is great!

Good luck...

We have a 2005 Intrigue 42' and I carry a set of 4 24" 2x10 in case we need them to level. If the HWH lights are blinking, the slides will not extend even if you push the button. If the slide light is not blinking the slides will go out. Being perfectly level is not a requirement. Norcold specifies you need to be 6 degrees within level front to back and 3 degrees side to side. Usually we only have to put boards under one wheel to get the coach to level. After you have leveled the coach enough times you will get a better feel for what you can do. Finding a level site is best but sometimes that is not possible so you have to assist the air bags with some boards.

I have a 42' Ovation 2004 model with 3 slides. I carry two 4 inch tall blocks for the front wheels and a three inch thick double wide block for one set of duals. I originally built them from Marine play wood for my 98 Allure 36 ft. But they have served me well the few times I have needed them. We seldom stay at RV resorts while heading for a specific location, but try to research where we are staying. There are a few parks in in the Rocky Mountain region and on the coast of California we have found challenging where we have had to use the blocks. But I have never had an issue where I couldn't level the coach. There's a KOA in Flagstaff and another near Williams, that can give pause. Another one south of Durango and Petaluma California that can be real challenges. There's a park just East of Santa Fe I'll never go back to. What bothers me is when parks go to the effort to have concrete sites and they arel almost past the capability of the coach to level. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

When using a phone app or a real level to check for level, where does one place the phone, or level? I usually place mine on the tile floor right next to the drivers seat. Is there a more accurate location?

A few comments:

On where to place a phone with a leveling app. I recommend the middle of the coach, on a tile floor, usually near the kitchen.

On being out of level to some amount. As mentioned, if the leveling system will allow you to open the slides, you can get by being off a 'fudge' amount. Also as mentioned, the Propane Fridges are more of a concern then the slides, as far as safety. Though I have removed our Norcold 1200, I do still recommend the ARP board. But not just for being slightly off level, but also for while traveling.

Best to all,

Smitty

The first importance is the refer is level and after confirming when the front tile floor is level so it the middle of the coach, I like you use a carpenters level when I want to make sure the coach is level. Though I have had the coach re-calibrated, some times the system seems to level the coach left front low. So after putting the slides out if the dining table doesn't seem to be correct out comes the 3 ft carpenters level. Most of the time its an optical illusion and the coach is level, but everyonce in a while its not. I've lived with it this way for almost 13 years, so I don't worry about it. I did have a leaky ride height valve which was replaced this spring so the leveling doesn't drift anymore. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Many coach manufacturers recommend verifying leveling fron inside the freezer. In my case, i've checked it on the freezer floor.

Thanks for all the great advice. We do have a Norcold (and I have emailed them re: the recall but have heard nothing back) It seems to be working fine. We do not run it on gas. Nice to know that HWH will block out the slides if the angle is too great. The level app is a great idea!!

Lee: In a way this is our 3rd coach. My parents owned two CC Magnas An '85 and a 2000 Millenium. They were very generous and let our family use the coach whenever we wanted. We traveled all over the place and they only asked that we pay for gas. We sold the 2nd coach after my Dad died in 2011 and my wife and I promised ourselves that when we retired the first thing we would do would be to get another coach. I retired (mostly) on January 1 and bought our coach on January 10. Jona retires in 7 days when school is out. We had looked for almost 2 years. Looking hard at Fleetwood, Winnebago (new), Newmar, Monaco and in the end went back to what we knew in our hearts was a better built coach. We decided on the Intrigue because we wanted a Tag Axle 40 or 42' 2007 or 2008 with 3-4 slides, clean, 525 CAT, light interior, no double couches. This coach was cherry, lovingly maintained by the original owner. We got all manuals, books, files, maintenance records, etc, etc..... Its a beautiful coach with nearly everything working perfectly. I'm pretty comfortable with all of the systems, etc and I'm relatively handy with systems (but not the engine or running gear). This forum has been an excellent source of intel on day to day operations and questions. I hope to be a contributor as we use the coach more and more.
