Phantom Charges & Starter

Hey...no fair Fred! I like following info about phantom charges as it affects all coaches.

Thanks to those who responded about the non starting Starter. I have cleaned the wire at the solenoid, purchased dielectric grease to coat the terminals, and the coach did start for a few days...However, yesterday morning it was dead again...I banged away at the solenoid/starter for a few minutes and she started. As I understand it there are gears in the starter and in the solenoid and they have to mesh in order to turn the flywheel. I am trying to figure out where to bang the structures in order to get the gears to mesh...Not having X-ray vision makes it difficult. I was hoping not to get a new starter but will see what happens this morning...I am due at Coach Care in Ventura tomorrow morning and one of the items is a new starter...Got to decide by tomorrow. No mention was made about it being under warranty and I will bring that up.
In addition whenever recent work has been done on my coach other problems have developed. In removing and reattaching battery cables what problems can I expect??? If they hook them up wrong I guess the electrics are toast...I also have two solar panels and I will tell them that and perhaps cover the collectors with blankets. Any other words of caution? Hi rvmike,

I would suggest you take your starter issue to a Cummins dealer in Ventura, CA: Cummins Cal Pacific 3958 Transport Rd 800 881 1159 and ask for Ron Rannals. I have had good results - good workmanship and fair pricing. If anyone can get warranty coverage, they can do it.

Seems to me that if you are successful with a little "tapping" sometimes, then there are two possiblies...

One, if the starter motor is turning but not engaging, then the starter bendix (gears)(solenoid) are not engaging, thus no starting, but the starter itself is turning. Sometimes banging on it causes the gears to engage. (used to be we took them off and greased them up) .

Second, if the starter itself is not turning, then problem is either upstream of starter motor, (ala Mr. Fred's wirings and voltage checks), or the motor itself has a dead spot and banging on it somehow moves it enough to get off the dead spot.

Just some added thoughts for your consideration.
