No throttle

On two separate occasions we have lost all throttle control. Press accelerator and engine does not respond. Idle is ok, just no throttle. Pull to side of road and shut off ignition switch and wait 10-15 seconds and start engine and all ok until it happens again.

Are we close to walking? This KC2600 is on our 1998 Country Coach Allure, with the Dynamax chassis, and we are in Paducah, Ky trying to get to Kansas City, Missouri.

Any help, suggestions, ideas? It would be greatly appreciated. I have looked thru the trouble shooting chart, but the problems is intermitting.

Call Steve. He's the only guy in the country that can overhaul the king control box. He has overhauled my unit twice in my 1998 32 foot country coach

I am not familiar with the engine in this coach. If it is a "mechanical injector" engine with an "air throttle" the air line could be plugged. This happened to a friend with an older Cummings. There is a filter in the line that goes to from the air tank to the throttle and it was partially blocked and he would lose the throttle. They cleaned the filter and all was well. You can tell if it is an "air throttle" by looking behind the pedal and there will be 3 air lines.

I had the same problem in Amarillo, limped into an RV idling all the way, Called Good Sam roadside service, a mechanic came out changed the fuel filter and that fixed the problem, Fuel was nasty and had water in it, Good luck hope this helps.

I had the same thing happen in Amarillo, barley made it to an RV park, called Good Sam roadside service, mechanic came out changed the fuel filter, and no further problems, fuel was dirty and had water in it, Good luck .

I had the same problem last year in my 1998 Intrigue. Driving to Arizona I set the cruise control & the foot throttle stopped working with the engine running, I coasted to a stop. After about an hour I found the fuse for the cruise control. I removed the fuse & tested it. It was good so I put it back in the fuse panel & the throttle was working again. I called CC tech for advice. They referred me to Cruise Control King in Minnesota. They where great! The cruise control & throttle work together & eventfully it will go out. The bad news is they don't make the part any more. But the good news they will rebuild it in one day & ship it back next day air. It was a four day turn-around do to bad weather back east.

There is a box about 6"x10" with a 3' cable & 3 different wire connections. CC tech said that I could get to the throttle control box from the inside motor hatch under the bed. Wrong! Cruses Control King tech told me it was behind the right rear wheel. That is where its was. I removed the throttle control box myself. It took about 4 hrs., but that was because I did know where the box was located & I had to figure out how to get to the box.

I had no way to lift the rear-end of the coach so I had Lowes cut me some 2x8 to size. I used the 2x8 to raise the rear of the coach by driving the rear tires on them. If I remember right 3 blocks high. There are two bolts with locknuts holding the box in place. Laying on my back I could barely reach the bolt & nut. The cable needs to be disconnected from the throttle linkage & disconnect the 3 wire connectors. Looking at the photos that I took the cover is off the box. It is not necessary to do that. The two bolts are on the plate that the box is mount to. So unbolt them & the plate & box will be loose. Now remove throttle linkage (you may need to go inside & use the engine hatch to do that). Disconnect the 3 wire harness. They are all different so you will not mix them up. I sent the box with the mounting plate to CCK.

To install the rebuilt box took about a hour. Bolting the box up was easier than I expected. Again if I remember right I did need to use the engine hatch under the bed to reconnect the cable to the throttle linkage. Connect the 3 wiring harness. Close everything up & go for a test ride.

I had your symptoms about 11 years ago with our C8.3L Cummins.

About three months later the engine quit about 1/2 way down from Donner Pass on Eastbound US 80, but I did not know it at first.

We had enough air to brake our descent and park on the roadside in Truckee.

Cummins Rocky Mountains in Reno diagnosed a failed injection pump.

They replaced the pump and the mechanical fuel pump.

No problems since.

I would recommend shopping for diagnosis and the repair and/or replacement of the pump before leaving home again to get a clean shot at the best price for repairs in a convenient location.

Our 04 ISL had the same problem. It was a failure of the electric throttle control attached to the throttle pedal. We had to be towed to Cummins for repair.

Called Steve, with Cruise King, about throttle problems with our 98 Country Coach Allure with 8.3l mechanical engine. Im paying closer attention for details the next time it happens to help him diagnose problem. We are thinking of a rebuild of the King Control 2600 throttle box.

That sounds like a good plan. I had them rebuild mine a few years ago, I think it was around $450-$500, and it has worked great ever since.

As a funny side note, they used to sell an "emergency kit" for when these failed out on the road. It consisted of a 40-foot long piece of string and a wedge to prop up the bed an inch or so to allow access to the engine compartment. You tie the string onto the mechanical throttle lever on the engine and hold the other end in the drivers seat, pulling on it to accelerate. Not kidding, this was an actual item available for purchase.

Had same problem in the past with my '96 intrigue 300 Cummins and problem was stuck closed exhaust brake. Jim Veen , prior 10299 Intrigue.

Yes, I made my own mechanical throttle wire string that runs out from the engine compartment to the throttle. I made a small hole for access behind the center pull-out drawer so the wire can be attached level. The "kit" is good to go by just connection the wire to the turnbuckles. All parts from Home Depot. Works good, but only need to use it once. Steve has rebuilt my King box before.

I have rigged up the throttle with a wire that can be pulled from drivers seat. Seen this setup on another site. It will work to get you off the road.

We have the same 1998 Allure. Out of curiosity what does a rebuild on the King cost?

I read someplace to carry a (string, rope, something) in case this fails. You can pop the master bed and tie to the throttle linkage. I guess in a pickle this would get your around a truck stop parking lot or off the interstate. Not saying I have the nerves to do it but the side of interstate is really bad place to be! I guess a runaway RV powered by a string tied to the linkage may yet be even worse :0

Nate, one reply said 450-500 dollars. Lots of cash, but piece of mine with less mechanical failures, we just have to pay or stay home. Don't like the price but comfort comes with a cost.
The response I received from Steve, with CruiseKing, was very professional and a repair could be done without breaking into my 401k.
