Allison 3000 MH

I am going to buy a 2005 Siena 36' quad slide. When looking at the spec sheet it states that it is a six speed automatic w/ 2 overdrive gears. Can anyone tell me about the overdrive. I do not have the manual 0n the transmission. Thanks, Ken # 51430

I have the same coach as you 2005 Siena 36' quad slide #51264.
What is it that you would like to know about the two overdrives? RJ

I had a 2005 Inspire Da Vinci 40' with the same transmission. The overdrive only changes the RPM by several hundred RPM's. My Inspire would shift to the overdrive gear between 5200 and 5300 RPM. It only comes into play on the highway when you reach a certain RPM. The transmission will drop down to 5th as soon as you depress the accelerator once you are in the overdrive mode until you incur a mid grade. There is an economy mode on the transmission selector that will allow the transmission stay a while longer in the overdrive mode. I did not use unless I was traveling on relative flat roads. Do not use in mountains areas.

I hope this helps some. I think you should find the Allison owners manual and read it for more detailed info.

I don't understand the statement regarding the rpms. Where do you observe the 5200 to 5300 reading? That can't be engine rpms. Thanks, Ken

You are correct. The RPM should have been 52 to 53 miles per hour. I guess I had a brain fart.

If you keep your foot to the metal the transmission shifts around 2250 rpm at 53 mph from drive into 5 th gear. Thats with 12R or 315 tires. It would be sooner with 295 and smaller tires. The shift between 5 th and six is above my cruise speed at full throttle, but when I start pulling grades the shift from 6th to 5th is like you say only somewhere around 400 rpm. I think the widest shift is between 2nd and third gear. And sometimes wish there was another gear in their somewhere. When pulling 9 %+ grades the in between gear would help. Some two lane roads on the West Coast of Oregon and California can be a real challenge. Colorado has some choice grades, and the Wyoming grade out of Jackson Hole going west can be a challenge. There is nothing special regarding the Allison transmission. Any time the output shaft turns faster than the input shaft it's considered overdrive (less than a 1 to 1 ratio). Just so happens that 5th and 6th gears are overdrive but they shift just like all the other gears. Nothing for the driver to do as it's automatic. Also, just an FYI. The torque converter locks up in second gear and sometimes it can feel like a shift when in fact it's not, just the torque converter locking up.

Ok, thanks for information on the overdrive issue. I now have better understanding of what's going on. We went and looked at the rig today again and we will close the deal tomorrow. I'm sure this will not be the last time I call for help on something. It is good to know there are folks out there that are willing to help. Thanks again, Ken #51430.

Suggest you go to the Allison web site and download the manuals. There have been some changes in the transmissions, mostly more built in diagnostics and maintenance info displayed for you. Depends on the year.

Basically, you push the "D" button and the transmission will ultimately try to shift up to 6th gear as you accelerate. Fifth and 6th are the overdrive gears. The transmission also works with your Jake brake and most will normally downshift to 4th gear when the Jake kicks in but this is programmable by Allison and yours may be different.

Ken,

The overdrive gears are 5th and 6th gears. 4th gear is direct drive 1/1. 5th gear is overdrive at .75/1. And 6th is overdrive at .65/1.
