2007 Allure running hot

Hi All,

I just completed a trip to Fort Worth Texas from Pleasanton CA. The coach ran great but certainly does not like the heat. My coach has good power but unfortunately it likes to heat up on the grades. I am manually shifting to be most efficient but still the coach will reach 220 and I always back off and slow down. Has anyone experience this problem with at 400 ISL? Has anyone made any changes to their coaches to improve the airflow to the radiator?

FYI my engine fan is working perfect and as soon as start down a grade my temp drops right back to normal at 201.

Thermal Wax Valve.....it really works. Coming out of Oregon it was at 203, normal is 185. The first time I came from Oregon over the Siskiyou's, engine shut down at Ashland Ski resort.

I have a similar situation with my 2006 Inspire 51748. The key to controlling the heat is to keep the RPMs up (1500 plus) when in hotter situation. The Allison folks taught me to "work of the back of the transmission" i.e. shift down to keep the RPMs up by using lower gears. We put 11000 miles on it last year, and learned that while running in cruise control just down shifting at the start of any grade and up shifting at the crest of the hill kept it cool.

The challenge is still slow stop and go traffic on a hot day. Staying in the lowest gears helps, but there are still moments where the gauge pushes 230 briefly. It always continues to run smoothly and never smells hot when checked.

There was a string of posts on reprograming the electronic control unit a couple of months ago, and some good comments by Kevin Waite if you can find that here.

We experienced heating issues and had Oregon Motor Coach run a wire from the fans to a blank switch on the console so we can manually turn them on. We have no more worry about heat. We can climb hills @ 185 temp towing a 5000lb SUV.

Check out Source RV in Eugene, OR they have a wax valve that makes your fan controller obsolete. The fan increases on a variable bases as the engine temp increases. The valve kicks in at 185, and will be at high speed when temp hits 192. My 02 Intrigue with the 400 ISL never gets higher than 195 with this setup.

Later this year I will be heading to Source Engineering in Eugene Or. to have the wax valve installed on my Cat C-9. My temps run around between 196 and 208 on my Sliverleaf. I talked to Jim Walls at the FMCA Rally in Albany and he said it about a 2hr install.

Sorry, I was wrong on my earlier post. The fan speed maxes out on high at 199 not 192.

Also its important to know with this wax valve they put a restrictor in line to give you a medium fan speed at startup. This is mostly for keeping a/c high pressure side down. I have removed mine and I just do not use a/c until its up to operating temp. Be sure to ask them about this.

Without the restrictor in place I have no fan speed at all at startup. It will start turning around 180 degrees. This is really nice as the fan is only turning when needed. Plus in the winter it really helps in getting the temp up to operating range a lot quicker.

Your current fan controller is fed by three different sensors that controls its speed. The wax valve is only fed by coolant temp. Thus a much simpler and reliable system.

Well the problem of my coach not starting is a 200 amp relay, the starter was fine. Country Coach didn't have the relay. OMC was temp out of stock, but good Old ERIC at Premier Motor Coach service center in Tucson had the part and is due to arrive tomorrow UPS red. Maybe I'll get my coach back Thursday, get my state inspection sticker and be on my way by Saturday. I'm supposed to be at Eric's Monday for a few minor repairs before heading to Colorado for a get together, and visit my home away from home, Durango, and Fall Color. Then we may head for San Diego!. We are on our way from calif to the east coast, thru the Arizona while climbing out of Phoenix to flagstaff I saw temp of 219. My coach is usually 202, i thought that was normal.

I would say thats pretty close to normal with later engines. Now that I have a wax valve controller for the fan on my Cummins my temps have dropped about 12 degrees. I run about 195 going up the same grade, now on a hot summer day. , where before I would run 210+. But with a flakey Sauer Danfoss Fan controller the temp would even be higher and the yellow temp warning light would come. I have forgotten at what temp engines will derate, but its pushing somewhere over 220. You can tell you are in trouble when your oil pressure starts to drop, that means the system is really under stress.
