1995 CC Affinity Voltage Problems New Owner

I have owned this wonderful very clean 1995 CC Affinity for almost two months I have replaced shocks, flushed cooling system had the chassis serviced, Dash air fixed with new compressor dryer and expansion valve and installed a Tire Minder system.

After about 200 miles the volt meter went from 14 volts on engine start to11 volts on engine start. We just completed our first trip this past weekend, a 180 mile trip to Possum Kingdom State Park. We started with 11 volts and after about 120 miles the volt meter was pegged at 10 volts and we got a low voltage warning, we stopped and ran the generator for about 30 minutes batteries charged to 12.5 volts and we made our destination with the low voltage warning the last 15 miles. I should have left the generator on but I didn't think of that at the time.

After getting parked and plugged in I called Coach Net and they sent out a great tech that found some loose wires on the alternator. After fixing the wires and testing the alternator we had 14 volts at the alternator and 14 volts at the batteries but only 12 volts at the volt meter on the dash the tech thought the volt meter would read higher after the batteries were fully charged.

On the way home we started with 12 volts on the dash and decided to run the generator on the way home, we maintained 12volts for 150 miles and I turned the generator off and the volt meter slowly dropped to just a little over 11volts so I restarted the generator for the rest of the trip and got back 12 volts on the dash

The other issue which may be related to the voltage problem is the Heart Freedom inverter charger which I assume is 20 years old. While parked at home and plugged in to a 30amp outlet I have had no issues while running AC units and the GE Adventum oven at the same time, how ever on this trip every time we tried to use the oven it would trip the charge circuit breaker on the Heart inverter while plugged into 50amp shore power. I also noticed when we got home the charge circuit breaker had tripped sometime on the way home, I reset it and 24 hours later it is ok and the batteries are fully charged

Not sure what to do next, I am most thankful for any help with these two issues

With those symptoms, I have replaced the Alternator, 2x during my ownership.

Oven, charger, AC units, and maybe an electric water heater, refrigerator sucking amps, could overtax the inverter and not allow the charger to perform as designed.

If the battery charger or inverter do not fail during a lower electric load, you have just overloaded the circuit.

On my rig, that usually trips the Heart inverter fuses.

Anything that creates significant heat is a large load on your circuit. Hair dryer, coffee pot, curling iron, water heater, electric heater, and of course so are the AC units, if you are running all three.

Reduce the loads and you should be ok.

Charlie,

If you haven't done it yet, I would have your coach and house batteries load tested, even if recently replaced. That would eliminate part of the puzzle. You may also want to double check the output of the alternator at a shop that can bench test under load.

Thanks for all the input, now I just need to find what to fix. Our coaches are a little different my electrical panel is in the middle of the bus with the inverter charger, and I can't find any 300 amp fuses just a large red button that seems to be the main coach circuit breaker.

The house electrical compartment on my '95 Magna is accessed from inside the forward basement compartment by removable panels towards the front of the rig.

My Heart 2500w inverter is on the center driver side near the water heater. The house fuses are on the passenger side.

I have one 300A Class T fuse on the house fuse panel and one in the battery compartment near the rear axle. You can find these fuses in the wiring schematics of your manual.

If you have no 12v systems working and a fully charged battery while not connected to shore power or the generator, check these fuses.

Check them for continuity using your multimeter.

I have been unable to find the source of this problem so I am taking the coach to a truck repair shop in the morning to load test the batteries and alternator, test the battery isolater and check for any loose wires. I will update this post with the results.

Charlie,

Check the ignition solenoid, mine was going bad and the symptom was a voltage drop between the battery and the volt meter, voltage would vary as I drove down the road.

The click you hear when the key is turned to the on position is the ignition solenoid, on my coach it's under the dash on the passenger side, on other coaches it's in the compartment under the drivers seat.

Problem fixed. Ricks RV Kaufman, TX found that the battery isolator was defective replaced it with a 200 amp solenoid $114 bucks, this solved my battery voltage drop while driving. They also found that the charging circuit breaker in the heart inverter charger was weak and replaced it, They also replaced the inveter and transfer breakers in the inverter while they were inside the inverter $15 bucks each.

Everything is working as it should. Thanks for the help and thanks for being here.
