Loss of RPM signal

Yahoo Message Number: 108473
Our coach is a 04 Intrigue with the Cummins ISL 400. We bought it used about 5 years ago. In the past our engine warning light has come on about every 5,000 miles or so. We read the code on our Silverleaf and it says "loss of rpm signal" The light and code resets after turning off the ignition. It would not come on again for another 5,000 miles or so. I talked with a few folks familiar with the engine and was told there are both a cam position sensor and a crank position sensor which send out the rpm signal via the ECM. The last couple of days I have been getting the warning about every 100 miles or so. I stopped at a Cummins dealer and purchased a cam/crank position sensor. Both sensors are the same part number. It looks like it would be easy to change out but I have no idea where it is located on the engine. The folks at Cummins were no help on that either.
Has anyone had this problem and if so what was the fix? I am worried that if both sensors fail I will be left sitting on the side of the road. We travel to Mexico in the winter and sitting on the side of the road there is not a pleasant thought.

Norm, The sensors are located in the rear of the gearcase, above the air compressor. You must remove the hydraulic pump from the compressor(drain fluids, disconnect hoses) and remove compressor from gearcase(drain coolant and air hoses). The sensors are now accessible.
Did our 2002 370 ISL in July and it's better than ever. ....Skip 2002 Intrigue #11329.

Thanks for the information Arthur. Sounds like it not a very easy job to do. Did you do the work yourself? Why did you replace them?

Hi Norm, Yes, I did do the work myself, it was a struggle. This work was on the "CAPS" fuel injection 370HP engine. The "common rail injection" sensor location may be  different.

PID code 190 set in Silverleaf when the engine hiccup would cause a recoil in the driveline. Started out as an occasional hesitation and slowly got worse till I was afraid the jerking would cause damage.

I tend to procrastinate, bought our sensors (two 492 1597) back in 2008 when Silverleaf first recorded a random code. Was intermittent for years till this summer. We got caught in Idaho low on power and jerking under load. May be accessible from above, but then the injector pump and injector lines would need to be removed. Which means (on ours) the closet has to come apart.

I worked on cars and trucks for 45 years and had my own (hands on) shop last 28 years. Hope this helps.....Skip 2002 Intrigue #11329    239-349-0119

Thanks, that was just the information I was looking for. That is the same part number that I purchased. I only have one but will order another one soon so I can replace them both. Our symptoms are the same as what you had. Our engine is the ISL400 but it is a Caps system, not common rail.
I do a lot of my own mechanical and electrical work but I am not sure I want to tackle this one. I will lift the back hatch and take a close look at it.
Do I need to replace any gaskets in the process? Thanks again for the information.

Hi Norm, Two gaskets, one for the compressor mounting flange and one where the hydraulic pump mounts to the compressor. Also some water pipe seals where the pipes install on the compressor head for cooling.

Would you by chance have the part numbers for the required gaskets? Thanks for the photos and again thanks for the help. I think the labor cost to have Cummins do this job will put a big dent in our travel budget.

Sorry Norm, I checked receipts and files, those numbers I didn't keep but they were all in stock at the Cummins dealer. Draining fluids and cleaning parts and surfaces, taking care and gaining access takes time. All from the bottom reaching up along the frame and engine block.

Good luck, any questions give me a call......Skip 2002 Intrigue #11329 239-349-0119

Thanks Arthur, I am on the road heading to Mexico. I am going to stop in at the Bakersfield Cummins shop today and get some quotes from them. On the phone they said it would take about 4 hours.
I misunderstood your explanation of how you accessed the sensors. I thought you did it all from the top.
I can get good access from the top of the engine through the cover in the bedroom but I guess that is not how you get to them.
I will let you know what I find out at Cummins.
