Zip Dee Awning problem

In 2012 I replaced all of our 12 year old window awnings. Zip Dee sews with an overlapping stitch strips of canvas together to obtain the appropriate width for the window. In 2012 both the seams and the canvas failed.

Now on one window 2 of the double seams failed in a moderate windstorm. The thread failed but left the canvas intact. Actually the holes for the double seam are in alignment. Called several canvas companies and they all said bring the canvas in with nothing attached and they could repair. That's a bunch a work getting the canvas down.I've decided to repair (or at least try) to seam the canvas "in place".Have a very good friend that is a "Super Seamstress" and she gave me some ideas on how to do this.A local canvas company uses a thread called "Tenara" that has a lifetime warranty, it costs $100+ dollars per roll. They recommended a polyester uv outdoor thread (as did my friend).I found a heavy duty outdoor uv protected polyester thread at a Jo-Ann store for about $6/roll. They gave be a diagram and instructions for using the existing holes (where the old thread was) and using a "Back Stitch).Some other advise they imparted, the uv protection only lasts about a year so re-spray the seams every year and the canvas every several years. That's what I'm going to try.

Hope this works!!Taking the awnings down is difficult and it's expensive to have it done.

Ours are 9 years old and have been doing the same thing. I started using hot glue and awning tape several years back and it's holding up OK. It quick, easy & cheep.
