Dim Monitor Lights on front panel of 2000 Magna

Yahoo Message Number: 108609
Does anyone have a fix for dim lights on the monitor panel of a 2000 Magna?... It is extremely hard to discern any of the fill levels for the various water tanks on the coach. The lights are lighting up, but they are extremely dim. They can be read if it is the middle of the night and no lights are on in the coach. However, if there are lights on, I can not read the panel. Does anyone know of a fix?

Thanks

Are you talking about your SilverLeaf monitor? On mine there is a programming button to set the brightness for both daytime and nighttime use.

You can replace the bulbs. Do a search from the group yahoo page for this group. There was quite a few posts on this subject and instrument panel brightness.
Hope this helps.

nope, not the silverleaf. On the 2000 Magna there is a monitor panel over the passenger seat which displays the "fullness" status of the black water, grey water, fresh water, and LP tank. Depending on which toggle switch is pressed, the display indicates empty, 1/4 full, 1/2 full, 3/4 full, full. A small lightbulb is beneath each. The bulbs all glow (dimly) as the appropriate toggle switch is activated, but the light is too dim to be seen if it isn't dark inside the coach.

Thanks, but I did a search. I can not find anything referring to the dim lights. I seem mostly to find stuff on "instrument" panel lights, but the issues seemed to be more with the rheostat control than the bulb assembly.

More help?....

Thanks

Hey Skip, I have the same problem on my 2000 Magna #5784. I was going to try and replace the light bulbs with led's. They are tiny so not sure there is a replacement. Next I am going to try and "clean" the routing that shows which function is being lit. Please let me know if you find a fix...

My tank lights are bright. If all of your lights are dim I would suspect a ground problem on those circuits. I haven't looked but I assume all of these lights share a common ground wire. Try checking the ground wire or run another ground wire to them.

There may also be a dropping resistor in the circuit for the bulbs that may be increasing in value. If so you need to replace it.

It's not a ground problem. It is a design problem. I had the same problem and asked CC about it years ago. The problem is the bulbs are too far back of the front lens and the bulbs were not bright enough. I replaced all of the bulbs with a higher output and it worked. I don't have the part number of the new bulbs because a good friend found the right bulbs for me and I didn't keep the numbers. Sorry.

Skip - hopefully my message #101086 came up with your search. In it and a couple others around it I discussed my experience changing out the monitor panel lights to LED's. Nothing has changed since I originally wrote that response. It is interesting that someone is getting plenty of light with the original bulbs. The ground shouldn't have been my problem as the LED's work fine, but Mikee's resistor may be a factor. Before switching to LED's my lights were only visible at night in very low lighting. Let me know if you have further questions.

Check your grounds!! If you have dim lights then you have a bad ground some where .I would start by checking for corrosion on the battery cables!!

HI Dan, do you happen to remember where you found the LED's that will replace the tiny bulbs? Do they have a number??

Thanks in advance,

If you are talking about the dash board lights, I had mine changed to LED's and it made a huge difference. Contact me if you want to know how many of each color etc.

I changed my tank monitoring light to LEDs and it made it worst. The amount of current it takes to turn on the LED is very small. In my case all the LEDs would always light up when checking any of the wet tanks regardless of the actual level. Any amount of leakage current between the sensors turned on the LEDs. I did multiple tank cleanings and it did not help. It worked great for the LP reading. Maybe putting a resistor in series with the LED might work.I put the incandescent bulb back in and got accurate reading again.

Yes, your message was the one that helped.... I've ordered the LED versions and will give them a try.

Thanks to you and everyone who've been responding. It is great to get ideas from people who've already solved problems.

I just did the changeover to LED lights ... I used the ones referenced in an earlier message. I too had the "always on" experience, but I switched the polarity on the LED's (by rotating the bulbs 180 degrees) and voila. Now I have nice bright readings for each level in the tanks.

Now I'm adding bulbs to the voltage readout on the monitor panel. It was easy to find the correct polarity for the two values of 12.5 and 12.0 volts. However, I'm still fiddling with getting the polarities right for the other readings.... It is difficult because my batteries are quite content to readout those two values. Getting the panel to activate the other values is not so easy. I guess I'll need to closely inspect the bulbs and see if I can figure out which way they sit in the sockets when they are in the proper polarity.

Thanks to every one who helped.... I'm considering adding these same (or colored ones which are available too) LED's in other bulb spots. They sure make reading the panel values much easier.

You stated in your post that you had experienced the "always on" lights in the dash & toggle switches. How did you correct it? We just experienced it within the last 3 weeks. I have been shutting off the chassis battery switch to preserve our new chassis batteries.
Any help from any of the website members is welcomed.

Thanks,
