Slide-out (mechanical) repair

Yahoo Message Number: 108610
When extending the large left-hand slideout, unknown to us, a Kleenex box of tissues fell behind the trim and prevented the complete extension on that end (to the rear of the coach). When I attempted to retract it to dislodge the box, it was clear that it had canted the slideout, and a tooth or two had sheered in the mechanism. With patience, I was able to retract it back in fully. I can see the track and "gear box" in the very narrow opening under the slideout..
I'm a pretty savvy DIY guy ... what does it take to replace the stripped gear? Thanks in advance.

I can't see a Kleenex box sheering off the teeth on the slide rail. Is it the shear pin that snapped, if so you will have to get it back in time and get the right shear pin.

You want to be sure you have the correct shear pins. Kevin Waite is a good source. Get a couple of extras. I changed a few of them until I got the correct pins, and none since.

Other bolts that "fit" allow the mechanism to rock which snaps them, and also enlarges the hole they pass through which can lead to problems in the future.

Michael, I should have been more clear. When the Kleenex box was pinned behind the rear trim of the slide-out, it prevented that rear end from fully extending out. The front end continued to seat fully out, canting the slide-out. It appears that a TOOTH or TEETH of the gear mechanism"‹ sheared. As I retracted the slide-out back in, it would "skip" as the motor rotated the gear along the track . . . or so it seemed. I may be wrong.

Hi Ken

The slide mechanism has square drive shaft with shear bolts, I had the same thing happen only it was a shoe that got caught behind the trim and it did not shear the bolts but instead twisted the drive shaft, So you might check the shaft for twisting or the tapered shear bolt,I replaced the section of shaft that twisted and all is OK now. The parts are available from Power Gear product support, they sent me a parts list, then I ordered the shaft section and spare shear bolts. Hope this helps.

And I may have made a poor assumption about the shear pin. I have not encountered that problem, though have had a wife's sandal pinned when putting out the bed slide. I retracted it, removed the shoe, extended it and retracted it all without difficulty. Yours is a good question for Kevin Waite! We are 18 months into owning this one, and 18+ thousand miles in that time. Just finished a 4000 mile 5 week trip without any hitches at all. Hoping we have all the bugs out!

I would give Kevin a call and just see what he has to say, great guy I have ordered shear pins and ride height valve from him. All you need is your coach number and he can get most things for it.

I had the same symptoms however it was a gear in the slide motor. Bought a new slide motor from Kevin. Easy repair if there is the gear that is stripped that seems more likely.
