Tires...... again

Yahoo Message Number: 108970
Getting ready to replace my Toyo tires and want to go with Michelins through the FMCA. It shows a replacement for my M111Z Toyo's on the drive axle being equal to 12R22.5 Michelins. FMCA lists several with 12R22.5 XZY3, XDS and XZE as available at about the same money. Does anybody have an opinion on which is the better tire. I also want to replace the steer tires with 3.15/80R22.5's as that is what is on there now.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Steve,

I put 315R80 Michelin XZA2 Energy on the steer axle of my '03 Magna and recommend them to you if that is the stock size on your coach. The tire is very quiet and smooth. I think that Mich has the same tire in a 295R80 which is the same height as the 12R. That is what I'll get for drive and tag when the time comes.

My tire choice is the same as George's except I ran Bridgestones on the rear. May switch to Michelin on the rears next time. Just redid the front Michelin steer tires after 7 years.

We have 295R80s XZA2 Energy all around on our Inspire via the FMCA Michelin deal. Would not have anything else.

I have 31580R XZA2 Energy all the way around on my 2000 40' Magna. I also purchased them through the FMCA program .

We have Toyos on our 2006 Inspire 36, have put about 18k miles on them in two years, had no troubles, and are very pleased with how the unit handles on the road. They show little wear.

We put valve stem extensions on these and it makes the tire check routine much easier give the wheel structure.

We are on our second set of 12R22.5 XZE* Michelins and have been very happy with them.

295R80X22.5 are not the same height as a 12R; They are @ 3% smaller.
I put the 295's on my coach and had the engine computer re-programed so I could get accurate info from the Silverleaf. If you check the mfg. specs on the tires you will see about 3% difference in the revolutions per mile.
Additionally I found about a one mile per galleon improvement in fuel mileage with the XZA2 tires over the previous Goodyears on my coach.
P.S. My dash speedometer now reads 2 mph fast at cruising speed.

We had good support, and felt safe, on our 12R's XZE* tires. A very robust tire. (Check the specs on the XZE, compared to other tires - while for sure not the only consideration, the weight of the XZE (And XZE*) are usually higher the most others... More meat, more protection.)

We lost two due to a pot hole impact. During a Michelin tire shortage, ended up with BF Goodrich ST230 12R's too. Also feel they're a good tire, and FMCA discount too.

About 15-16 months later, we put the ST230's in our Tag position. And bought 6 new XZA2's in the 295/80 size.

The XZE* ran rougher then any of these other two tires.

The ST230 felt good on the steers, and I feel the sidewall flex helped reduce the impact of expansion joints, and other roughness of the highways we travel.

The XZA2's, again in a different size then the other two, were even that much more forgiving over the rough roads. And quieter too. They're supposed to be the highest efficiency, via less rolling resistance, of the these three tires.

We just completed over 8K miles on our 2016 travels, very pleased with the XZA2's, in 295/80 22.5 size.

Best to all,

Smitty
