Flat Tow 2017 Jeep Cherokee -- two questions

1. Is anyone flat-towing a 2017 Jeep Cherokee? If so, do you have the steps for getting it ready to tow written down? The manual instructions are totally confusing. I am looking for a 1, 2, 3, do this, then this, etc. There is a good video of 2016 steps but supposedly there are some changes for the 2017.

2. The manual says that before towing you should see your authorized dealer for the Mopar flat tow wiring recreational towing kit. The authorized dealer here in Tucson says the death wobble issue and charging the battery issue have been solved indicating you don't need the Mopar. Yet, the manual says...who to believe?

Before I do my first tow, does anyone have experience with these two issues? Shirley OBrien

Just bought a 2017 Ram pickup. Had to pull up the owners manual on line to get good instructions. Much more detail there.

Cherokee & Grand Cherokee are most likely different procedures. And tranny/transfer case make a BIG difference even on the same model.

I have a 2005 G C that I have flat towed.I stopped towing it because it would kill the battery every time I did. The local Jeep dealer, the owners manual and even the factory customer service people were absolutely useless .I still have the Jeep and I am planning on towing it in the future. While vacationing on the OBX, I ran into a fellow in an allegro bus that was towing a jeep identical to mine right down to the same color .I asked him if he had problems with his battery discharging while he was towing it. He said that he did not, so I asked him to walk me through his procedure for setting his up to tow . Came to find out, I did one thing differently. I was trying to tow mine with the switch in the ACC position. He turned his switch to the "OFF"position. Stall haven't figured out why I could not get a satisfactory answer from someone at the dealer or Chrysler that could have told me this!!!

I have been towing a 2005 grand Cherokee since 2005. I was the same way the battery was dead the first time I towed it. I called everybody at jeep and nobody knew anything. My wife puts it in the off position ( she does leave key in) and the battery only went dead the one time. They say to put it in the unlocked off position.

Apparently the steering does not lock up until you remove the key. My owners manual says to leave the switch in the first off position which kind of leaves a lot open to interpretation!!!!

We towed a 2005 GC for 10 years. The first two times we towed it the battery went dead. Then I saw on a forum that the 2005 GC did not have a steering wheel lock and that the owner's manual instructions were for the 2004. We put the Jeep on flat ground, put the transfer case in neutral, and took the key out of the ignition. I pushed the car while my wife steered it. No steering wheel lock. So, we rewrote our instruction sheet and towed happily for 10 years. The 2015 has no steering wheel lock either. I read on an automotive site that the insurance companies decided that many stolen cars are not damaged except for the broken steering wheel lock. Thieves could break a log and hot wire the car anyway so the lock didn't deter anyone.

PS we have towed our 2015 Cherokee for 18000 miles with no death wobble so I didn't get the modification done (knock on wood).

It's the Cherokee that was having the death wobble problem but not the Grand Cherokee. I have been towing Grand Cherokees for 14 years and will never tow any other car! They are so simple to hook up and they do not rack mileage up and you do not have to start them every time you stop to circulate oil or charge battery. Great toad!
