Engine warning light

I also experienced a shutdown today. Engine warning light came on an the engine shutdown. I pulled over an turned off the key an let it sit for a minute, it started right up but did it again a couple miles down the road. I just completed the wax valve conversion an serviced engine changed oil an all filters. I also flushed radiator an replaced thermostat. This happened on a 35 mile test run, engine temp was staying right at 195 according to gauge everything seemed fine. It started right up second time an ran perfect coming home another 35 miles. Intermittent issue can drive you nuts. 2007 Inspire 400 Cummins ISL

I had the same situation happen after 1800+ miles driving back to New Hampshire from FL. No prior indication, then warning light and engine shutdown. It restarted but only went a few yards before repeating the warning light followed by shutdown. Turns out the antifreeze surge tank was "low" according to the 400ISL system. Two gallons of 50/50 in the tank and it runs perfect.

No evidence of any leaks, but I will keep an eye out when things warm up and it can be inspected closely. Safe travels.

That was my first thought maybe the coolant level was low but I walked back there an the level was on the mark. I don't know what happened.

Brian,

Do you have a Silver Leaf system in your coach? Shortly after I installed my wax valve, I had a shut down incident such as you described. Mine was due to the exhaust manifold temp - it climbed over 160 and before I knew it, I was coasting with the engine off. It restarted and by taking it easy made it home.

WHat was explained to me is that the engine temp was not high enough to engage the wax valve - so the fan was not turning and the exhaust manifold temp was excessive and caused the engine to start shutting down to protect itself.

Hope this helps....and I'm sure others would be able to explain this in more exact terminology.

No I don't have silver leaf so I don't know about my exhaust manifold temp. I did put a needle valve in my set up so my fan turns slow all the time. Maybe 500 rpm, you can't hear it but enough to help ac condenser.

I have the Silverleaf adjusted to where I see the coolant temp and the exhaust manifold temp on the main screen...sometimes I'm watching them more than the road! Ha!

Your Silverleaf monitors exhaust manifold temperature? Mine does not, it's not a scan option. Maybe it's because I have a CAT?
