Kwikee Series 42 Step CC Intrigue 2001

This is FYI.

I am having a problem closing my step all the way and Kevin is also working on this with me. First I will admit I have never lubed this gear and don't know if I should be. Also, we live ocean front in North Myrtle Beach and do have salt air.

When the steps is closing it jerks when almost all the way in but the motor does finally shut off after a few seconds of jerking. I pulled off the access panel to have a look and took pictures of what I saw.

You can see that the gear has teeth missing at the end and this is where the problem occurs. When the gear gets to this area it makes the steps jerk and then shuts off leaving the steps out somewhat. The whole thing will probably fall apart if this continues much longer since the jerk is somewhat violent.

The problem I am having is finding this gear or even the entire motor assembly. Kwikee was sold to Power Gear and then Power Gear was sold to Lippert Components. I have spent many hours on the internet looking for a solution and when talking with them Lippert was not able to help. They are knowledgeable but only support and sell the Kwikee step starting with 2005 which is a different assembly.

Lippert has an upgrade kit that converts our old style to the new model. Total parts are about $800 plus what looks like much labor to convert. Lots of trouble for just a gear but may be the only option unless someone can offer a solution. Getting this conversion kit to match up with all the holes is probably wishful thinking.

I have looked for ways to stop the step before total retraction but could not make that work after trying different things for a few hours.

I will consider looking at one of the salvage yards but will probably opt for doing the conversion.

Any suggestions are much desired.

I seem to recall that these step openers were a converted Electric Window motor and gear. Maybe Lincoln. Perhaps a trip to an auto wrecking yard with a good picture or the gear itself would pay off.

Someone can give the name of salvage co in AZ, got old timers at present. I would find a machine shop that can make you a new gear.

Your problem sounds very much like the problems I went through with the steps on our 07 Allure, although I didn't have missing teeth on the gear plate. Having spent more hours than I care to remember underneath the steps and likely 4-5 calls with Kevin, end result was (and your pictures look exactly like our steps as well) was to replace the motor which I got from Kevin and it works like a charm now. The original motor as I found out after the fact is still available from AM Equipment, I don't recall the part number but ask for Butch and he'll know exactly which motor it is. You might want to check this link out
https://www.etrailer.com/comparison.aspx?pc=LC369473&pc2=LC301696 it has the bits and pieces I think you're looking for and the price seems to be considerably less than the $800 you're looking at. You may also want to try Googling Kwikee 42 steps then clicking Images rather than All, some of these pictures will likely give you some more hints. I found the Kwikee 42 manual online if you're interested.

Good luck.

I replaced our step motor this summer with this item from Amazon:

Amazon.com: ACI 83094 Power Window Motor: Automotive

I have the Series 42 step also.

The cost is about $40.

It took me about 2 hours to do the install. (At 73, my body does not move as well as it used to in tight horizontal situations.)

I wonder if during the install you can match the big gear to the motor gear to avoid using those last two gear teeth? If not, you may need to have someone fabricate a new gear wheel.

The last I hear Butch has left Lakeland FL and was traveling west. Suggest, you contact Kevin Waite 541-953-6162. Anyone that is on this forum I would also recommend joining the IRV2 forum. You can never be too wise, good looking or rich.

I read all the posts and followed all the links and also thanks for the private messages.

I decided to order the parts required from Lippert to do the Kwikee Series 42 conversion. I felt the best approach will be to remove all the parts and replace with new.

Lippert will have to manufacture the parts and said should be within fifteen days.

I will post a follow up when I get it installed.

Thanks for all the help.
