Refinishing wood?

Yahoo Message Number: 113503
After 16 years, the finish on some of my lower Walnut cabinets it's damaged mostly from water splashing. A woodworker friend of mine tells me the only way to properly repair this is to lightly sand off the old finish and put a new finish on. Has anyone done this? What type of highly water resistant durable finish would you suggest that would still match the original matte finish? Polyurethane? Lacquer?

Hi Rich,

I got the info from Davis Cabinets a few years ago for our '01 Intrigue. Use Deft satin lacquer. Sand lightly, spray on a couple of coats and looks great. My cabinets are walnut, if yours are different, different rules might apply.

You might have to search a little for the Deft product line.

I have heard Howard's Wood and Feed at Home Depot really brings them back to life, although I have not tried it yet.

Urethane is much more durable than lacquer. A top quality brand is Verathane. After light sanding you may need a touch of stain. Suggest Watco medium or dark walnut. On the bare wood, slightly (very slightly) dampen a terry cloth rag and initially apply the stain cross grain to the wood. It's much easier to start light and work towards the original color than to put too much on and then have to sand again. The stain may penetrate deeply into the wood. Wipe dry with the grain and let dry at least a day before applying the urethane. Use satin verathane sparingly with a good quality brush. It's difficult to get a good blend so it's best to refinish an entire panel or board. Good luck

Minwax polycrylic. It is water based, so no smell. Can be recoated in 1/2 hour.

Before you go full bore you should try Howard's Feed N-Wax and Howard's Restore-A-Finish. Takes s little elbow grease but well worth the effort'.

Oh my god!
Saw the recommendation from a previous posting and bought it on amazon.
What a fantastic product. Parts of My cabinets were too, looking "worn" and discolored. Wiped on and immediately saw the huge difference and improvement. Amazing!
Try it first, for sure

I second that recommendation of trying Restor a Finish first. We are working on our home kitchen cabinets (30 years old with lots of damage) We have one section near the sink that we have to sand and refinish, but the rest of the kitchen is looking like new.  We used very fine grade steel wool (0000) to apply and work into the wood. Wipe clean with fresh rags several times.  Allow to dry to see the final result. Some areas may take two attempts, but it's amazing! If you try and it doesn't seem to be good enough, you can sand, stain and refinish.

Jerry I've used Howard's feed and wax for years. It's very good, but once the actual finish is damaged, it doesn't last.

This stuff is combustible so dispose of it carefully.

I just refinished the entire interior of our 2000 Magna, and it was super easy. I used Howard's Restore a finish in golden oak color. Easy wipe on wipe off. I followed that with a coat of Howard's Feed and Wax and they look like new. I had water stains, dried out wood, scuffs and minor scratches that all vanished. I bought my via Amazon as they had all stain colors and many Howard's products. Could not imagine that they could look better.....

We used both deft at times and Howard's Finish Restorer. I think the challenge is that they are 2 different finishes and I believe using one precludes you form using the other. Deft is a lacquer that needs to be applied over clean wood and Howard's is wax and oil based that can go over anything. I used them in different places and found great success with the light maple interior. Most of the kitchen and water places I lightly sanded and applied the satin Deft and we thought the coach looked like new. In some of the less water exposed surfaces we used Howard's and also felt it protected the existing finishes and sealed small imperfections. With just a little judicious work we restored our 10 year old coach to looking like new; which was pretty rewarding.

On a side note, we sold the coach last may because work commitments would keep us from using the coach for about 2 years, boy do we miss our 2005 Magna Matisse - what a wonderful coach. After spending time in friends other brands, boy do I appreciate our Country Coach. Our plan is to try and find another all cared for 40' Country Coach in about a year from now in the 2005 to 2008 range...

Safe travels and Happy Holidays!

We used Howard's on our cabinets last spring and they still look like new. Since we have cherry wood cabinets we used their cherry colored Restorer. Since it worked so well we used it on the bull nosing of out koa wood cabinets in Hawaii. We will be back in Hawaii this fall will be interesting to see how it holds up

After listening to all these responses and doing some further research, I think I'm going to try the Deft lacquer spray. The Howard's Restor-a-Finish, being wax and oil does not last from what I have read, especially in areas where there's repeated water as in the kitchen which is really where my problem is. I guess the question is what color Deft satin do I use to match my Walnut and do I have to stain it after I lightly sand it? I have some Walnut pieces from the coach I can test on.

Rich,
On my walnut, I lightly sand it, then spray with Deft clear satin. Finish is great. I just did the top edges of the cabinet doors by the sink this week on our Intrigue.

Let me know how it turns out. I have similar issues. I guess now that they settled with you, you can start fixing it up.
