Tranny Leak

I've developed a transmission fluid leak where the fluid travels along the axle and hits the inside tire wall. I can keep it topped off for the 1,000 mile drive but has anyone else had this issue? Is it a seal?

I will be in the Palm Springs area, recommendation for a shop for a Allison transmission nearby?

I'd go to the auto parts store and get a couple of bottles of blue devil. I've stopped leaks in all types of vehicle. Even used it in the radiator of this Magna. Nothing in it to plug anything up. Check it out.

That sounds more like your rear axle inner seal from your description, not your transmission. Yes there is an inner seal that will leak onto the inside of your tire if it goes. Any competent semi truck shop, or certainly an Allison dealer should be able to replace it. I had one done and I would never attempt it. They have to pull the entire axle shaft and the bearings, but there's nothing special about our Meritor axles, except for the fact that they have to have the right seal. They'll know which seal when they get the old one out and take the identifying information off of it.

Sounds like the rear axle seal is leaking. Mine was leaking a few weeks ago and Colton Truck Terminal garage replaced the seal. Pretty big job since they have to pull out the axle, etc. They discovered it during my annual service visit.

Colton is not too far from Palm Springs.

Can you collect some of the oil? You should be able to tell the difference between transmission fluid and axle oil. Orlan is right about Colton Truck terminal, they could easily fix it. Just be aware you need an appointment about 3 weeks out though.

If you are leaking diff/axle lube you should be easily able to smell it. Tranny fluid has a very slight odor unless it gets burned. Had an axle seal leak and spray all over the inner dual and brake. $25 seal but a big job to replace. Went to a Freightliner service center.
