GE Microwave/Convection - Replacement

Yahoo Message Number: 115147
Looks like our 04's Allure subject unit is shot. (We had what we call 'The arching event!' - where we lost it. (DW accepts operator error...).

So, go with the same size replacement unit?

Or, does anyone have other options.

(I did some surfing, and read that GE sold this units name to a company in Southeast Asia that does not build them as well as before(?). (Internet - so who knows how accurate that is:)!)

Thus, my reason to ask if other unit recommendations:)!

TIA,
Smitty

Smitty, I don't have a recommendation for you...but was wondering what happened to create the "arching" situation?

Operator error:)!

The DW said she knew she'd made a mistake the second she turned on microwave with both the metal tray in, as well as aluminum foil covering something she was reheating. Instantaneous 'noise notification', as the 'it's alive' glow came out thru the glass doors. She had it off within 5-7 seconds, but said as she reached to open the door and stop it - she could see the arching towards the top of the unit.

We had a tech come poke around, and his recommendation was to replace vs attempt to repair.

Built in 03, so it is 15 years of age, and his rationale of why put that much money into that old of a unit, sounded right. And, the DW would like to change it from Black to SS, to math the Samsung's SS look too. (You know, maybe I should have a conversation with her about 'the accidental toasting' of our unit:)!).

The only potential downside, is comments I've read while researching on the Internet - that GE's basically sold their name to a manufacturer that produces the newer Convection Microwave units, and that they're not as good as the older units(?). (And that, was from one thread only - and I could not fact check that person's comment....).

They're pricey too:)! But, looks like a apples to apples swap out involved in this changeover to another GE unit(?).

I think I'll reach out to some of the tech's in Eugene area, for input on what is the right way to go... (While I say it's toast. The microwave function still works. And, the unit will still heat on Convection, it just never gets to temperature during pre-heat, and infrared wise, it's quite a bit cooler then the set temperature. So we can limp along well until I find a good replacement unit. Not even opposed to buying one from a salvaged coach, but with he costs of labor, might as well go new vs unknown used, is my thinking.)

Best,

Smitty,
I wound not hesitate purchasing the same convection/microwave unit from Amazon prime. Even realizing that 'nothing' made in today market is the same quality as the maket was when we bought our coaches.

I replaced my GE micro/conv. oven in my 06 Allure with a Sharp, which is far superior to the GE unit. The Sharp unit is identical size wise to GE, even had the zero clearance hinge.

John, thanks for the reply, but keep in mind that "replaced our GE unit with a Sharp..." would be a lot more helpful if you could describe the Sharp with a little detail.  The wife is not asking for a model number (thought that would be VERY helpful); just a brief description.

Ken:

It's a micro/conv. Sharp model # R-1880LSRT. I bought it @ Best Buy 4/13 and the SKU # was 1425712 and I paid $522. This model is in SS.

Will compare the Sharp to the GE Advantium(S?) to see how closely they match for swapping out. Thanks for the tip.

I think I'm like many here on this board in how I approach things for our coach. I do not mine paying more, for better quality. But, when 'quality' products are not available. I then adopt a 'get the best that I can find for reasonable price', and run with it. Then when, not if, they have a problem - I don't feel too bad about the $ to replace them.

The GE unit that we had, served us well. And we caused it's demise, so it owed us nothing.

Will keep researching, and probably pick one up in the Eugene area. May install it ourselves, or if we're in for other items, let the crew that knows the coach 'do their thing'. (And, help the local economy too:)!)

Thanks to all, and best,

I have the same Sharp 1880LS-T in my 94 Magna. I had to replace the original because a power surge wiped out the original one. Due to the location of the spice cabinet, this is the only unit I could find that had a left hand hinge located about an inch in from the corner and so would fit correctly. Mine was made in Thailand in April, 2010 and I purchased it on line from an appliance dealer in St. Louis about 6 years ago and had it shipped to me. The cost then was considerably under $522 although I don't remember the exact amount any more. Installing it was a piece of cake. I rarely use the convection feature but it makes me a hot cupa coffee every morning in a minute and 30 seconds.

We had a new GE Advantium installed and really love it. So much more efficient than the old one. Faster pre-heat, and I think more microwave power. Expensive, but worth it.

S. Brandt I'm curious about the model number of the Advantium and did you have to do any modifications? We also have a 2006 Intrigue and I am getting nervous about having to replace it.

Dennis, it is an Advantium 120. Model #PSA912SF4SS. We had it installed at Premier in Junction City, Oregon, but it does not appear that any modifications had to be made.

When we had to replace our Advantium, I had it exhausted to the outside. My thinking is it would last longer if it wasn't subjected to excessive heat.

How are going to keep the dust and dirt out going down the road and when the wind is blowing. Now your heater will have run more often because you have added an entrance to the coach interior. You also allowed an entrance when its hot outside. I have a vent fan over the Advantium that I turn on when cooking and need to rid the coach of odors. But it can be closed and a piece of insulation installed when the unit is not in use or when I travel in unfavorable conditions. TWInsall 2004 Intrigue 11731.

Many if not are vented outside, just like a stick and brick home.
Our coaches are not sealed nearly tight enough for this to make difference. However when vented outside it helps manage the humidity in the coach when cooking.

If you look at the rear of your coach, you will se a vent cap for the washer, did the same thing for the Advantium.

If you are eliminating the Adventium ... do you still need the black pans for baking? I bought a 2007 Allure 470 and the Adventium works well with the microwave but, according to the manual, I need black pans to use the oven ... do you still need yours or will other pans work?

Hi Sam,

Our GE Advantium 120, came with a metal round platter. We swap it into the unit, prior to convection cooking, in place of the glass microwave round platter.

If this is what you're referring to, I'll gladly ship you our's if we end up replacing our unit.

And if I don't, I ran into this on Amazon:

Amazon.com: GE Advantium Metal Cook Tray Part # WB49X10053: Home Improvement

If, this is the item you're talking about:)!

And an update. Next week, we're going to remove out unit, and go to where GE tells us to take it. Have them see if it might be an inexpensive repair, or 'Scrap it, and replace it!' type situation.

If we repair it, well not pan fo Sam:)! And if we don't, then the DW gets a SS unit of some kind:)!

And interesting conversation about venting to the outside. Can see Pro/Con to each... If we replace it, more research for Smitty!!

Best to all,
Smitty

I wanted to update that the DW has made an executive decision:)!

After reading this thread, and receive private messages from here and also IRV2 forum members - she said she wants to replace the unit vs repair it. And, she wants the replacement SS Advantium 120.

The part that made us both LOL! Was when we went to order it from Home Depot. It's not legal to sell this unit in California (And a few other states too!). And, the Home Depot online sales specialist, said it was also illegal to have it 'in' California too...

So, now besides having to slow down to 55 MPH, pay higher fuel taxes then any other state, dodge pot holes deeper the Meteor Crater - we're going to also need to worry about an inspection of our coach having 'illegal appliances'! Can see the officer calling it in now: "Dispatch, send backup, we have another Advantium 120 User! Milepost 146, Interstate 5, Northbound!" Then to us: "You two stand up, and put your hands on top of your head!".

Heck, they may make us sit on Bench W, during intake!!! (You can get anything you want, accepting Alice, ....).

So, looks like we'll do this swap out on the road. Either have one delivered to Yuma Home Depot for cutworm pick up, and then take it with us to Idaho where I'd have the time to swap it out. Or, DW says she can limp along using only the microwave until Sept/Oct when we'll be in Oregon. Save a bit on sales tax that way.

We don't leave until the end of this month, and we'll decide what to do then:)!

And I thought the research was the hard part - never even thought about having problems actually getting the product:)!

Smitty

Smith,
Did any of these companies or persons give a reason for this microwave being illegal in CALIFORNIA?

I was just curious and tried to google it but could not come up with anything on it.

There a lot on disposal of microwaves but nothing on that model being illegal.
