Question about Battery water levels

Yahoo Message Number: 115366
We have a 98 CC Magna with 2 house batteries 6V, 8 D class.

The water in the batteries has to be refilled every trip or frequently. Last time,(about 30 days ago) it took over a gallon of water for each battery. I checked them today and they took another gallon each.??
What would cause the loss of water?

Thanks in Advance,

Steven Guittar

Normal filling is once a month. I had same problem with my 99 Intrigue shortly after that started I had to replace the alternator and my two chassis batteries.

Steve, how old are your batteries? As batteries age, and the charge/discharge cycles add up, battery efficiency declined. One side effect is the need for more electricity to recharge, with heat being a side effect, so the battery body heats up, gets warm/hot and the water evaporates faster. There are other causes like a bad cell, etc. As my original set of wet cell batteries hit 7 years, they got hotter and took more water.

Please keep me posted, I have #5661. I recently experienced this with my golf cart, had to replace batteries.

I agree with Lee, I'm just going to add that it also depends on the battery charger. If it still has the original inverter/charger onboard it "could" be not charging as it should be. Such as overcharging...

Had to have my inverter replaced last week on the road in Pa. Not charging even when connected to shore power.

Usually overcharging. Check the output voltage of the alternator.
