Windshield replacement/flatbed towing

Yahoo Message Number: 115451
Hi
We are camping at Seacliff SB in NorCal and some fine fellow chucked a rock from atop the cliffs and shattered the driver side windshield....glass all over the dash/actually punched through at the top
So
What is the likelihood that I can actually get a replacement in a timely manner
And since I'm fairly confident that it's undriveable, has anyone ever had their 40 footer flatbed towed? Is that possible?
Pretty sure tilt- up towing would result in another crushed oil pan.
Thanks

Coach net had ours towed for a broken shock about 80 miles. They send one of the very low flat beds that the rear axle moves forward so the incline was very low without issue. I just drove it up on the bed while they had a chain wench tied to front axle.

I had a 37' Allure towed and it was scary as hell. Don't know where Seacliff SB is, provide a city and I will give it my best guess.

Had my 40' Allure towed on a flat bed low-boy. No problem, but make sure the tow company knows you'll be oversized. On our low-boy the bed was 3' High + Coach height meant in was over 15' tall. Had to plan a route around some low overpasses. Remember to fully raise the coach when loading so you don't drag and then lower the suspension/bags after you get it up on the trailer to reduce overall height. Good luck.

Had our 42' Allure towed. They jacked it up from the front, under the generator slide. $15K in damages, thank goodness I had pictures. The tow manager said "they sent to small of a truck with the wrong boom."
If you have to have it towed, flatbed it first choice, by the front wheels is a distant second. Make sure they disconnect the driveshaft and run an airline to release emergency brake. Document, document, document

Are they paying for the damage or the very lease the deductible? If you have two piece front windshield make sure your coach is level when they remove & replace. Duncan recommend by my insurance company out in Arizona, Phoenix did mine and it looked good initially, but not right as I would learn. I've seen others done by them same results, not good. It took over a year of them half way doing the job multiple times. I finally went back to the insurance company and convince them to let me go with another company of my choice. Creative Coach out near Lakeland, FL first time fixed right.

We were left idle on Interstate 5 near Sutherlin Oregon. I called Coachnet and said I wanted a flatbed because of our engine sits very low in the frame. They dispatched a flatbed from Yreka Ca. They took us to Cummins Northwest in Medford Oregon. The tow company did a great job.I think the company was Onarheim Truck repair. The problem requiring the tow was a failure of the electronic thing under the throttle pedal that sends the signal to the engine.
I have to add that I was very pleased with working with Coachnet. They called the Oregon State Police to have them check on our welfare while we waited for the tow. They also called us every half hour for a status report on the arrival time for the tow. When the coach was loaded and ready to hit the road it was after dark and they could not travel at night because of the height. We stayed in our coach at Seven Feathers Casino in Canyonville and the tow crew stayed at the Casino hotel. Our only cost was the repairs at Cummins.

For info. Due To engine overheating because of complete loss of antigel from the intercooler I had my Allure 42 towed from Banff, BC To Cummins Calgary, a more than 100 miles ride. The rv was towed up front by United Towing without a glitch and with a lot of care. It took them more than two hours juste to prepare it, including thé removal of the driving shaft and they towed it at no more than 50mph. Thé whole cost was covered entirely by Good Sam . The repair cost was another story. ..

Not such a good report, sorry to say. I think that RV Glass Solutions has an affiliate in Auburn (which is northeast of Sacramento on I-80). the RV Shops closest to you are either Leal's in San Jose or (I believe it is called) Merritt RV in Scotts Valley. I doubt that either can handle a windshield, though. Perhaps California Camper in Fremont can, but good luck getting an appointment.
Leals' phone is 408-286-5353. Of course they will be closed on the 4th. Wish I had read sooner my email. RV Glass is 888-777-6778. They can connect you to the Auburn facility.  California Camper's number is 510-793-8157. I don't have contact information for the Scotts Valley business.
Seacliff is a great place. I am embarrassed for us Californians that you had this incident. As to towing, I wound not accept anything other than a flatbed tow. Since I live in the Bay Area, I am not familiar with Santa Cruz County towing services.  However, I have a truck-driving "stepson" who lives there who can probably help me find such a capable towing company if necessary.  I can also communicate with fellow FMCA Freethinker Chapter Jim Ellmore, who lives in Santa Cruz, and who is a font of knowledge about these things, and who uses the Scotts Valley facility.
If you need more help than this, feel free to telephone me if you think I can provide it. My cell phone is 510-541-8735. I am intelligible after around 8:30 AM. I will be at the Alameda Mayor's Fourth of July Parade from about 10:30 to 1:00 or so. I may not hear the phone sound its foreboding gong, so leave a message.

Its been a couple of year however I do not believe Leal's does auto glass. Another resource might be Bay Area RV Parts and Service, Gilroy 888-980-2278. also there is a gentleman named Harry Lockwood in the Sacramento area, very familiar with Country Coach. Try posting on the IRV2 forum.

Thanks for all the replies!
Here is an update on my windshield saga....First rock strike was at dusk on Monday at dusk.....Park Rangers patrolled the neighborhood above the beach but couldn't find public access to the cliff area. I was up most of the night plinking around on the internet researching flatbed towing and decided I was going to have to tape up the windshield and try and get it home myself.
Tuesday morning another fusillade of rocks from the cliffs one of which struck my right windshield( no damage) and several others whizzed past the folks next to me. They called 911 and I went down to the park host who called the park ranger who again went up and drove about without much luck.
My wife and I decided to get out of Dodge a day early....unhooked in record time and pulled out to the ranger station where I taped up the windshield and hooked up the toad.
Most of the damage was up in the tinted area at the top but there were cracks running out and around for about a foot beyond that......several hours later , home with cracks extending from top to bottom....yikes...just made it.
Now we wait through the holiday period to get on with the ordering of the glass through, I assume, Coach Glass since that was the original provider.

Again, thanks for the replies....hope everyone had a great 4th!

Seacliff full hookup sites 11-12 were the rock hot spots, just in case anyone was considering a couple of days at the beach

What a nightmare! Very glad to hear you got out of there in one piece. We'll be crossing that one off our list of potential beachside camp grounds!

I'm sorry to hear of your problems. In all the times we have stayed at both Sea Cliff and New Brighton Beach state parks, we have never had a problem, whether in the beach front camp sites or those up on the hill. Still, the beach camp sites could be targets for mischievous elements in the population.  A few people are bad (or evil, if you prefer). The rest seem to take seriously their social responsibility. Please do not judge us by one bad example.
