Roof Air Conditioning

Yahoo Message Number: 115542

Hi Group,
Several years ago I replaced my rear AC unit. I remember well that prior CC Service Dealer here in So Cal said they needed to order a new board to work with the old AC and the New Penguin. Now I have replaced the front AC with the same model Penguin and they have change to a new thermostat that is huge and will not fit in my cabinet. So, they have mounted it sideways. Don't like it that way not good at standing on our heads. Anyone have a similar problem. They say I have to have the new thermostat. My question is way cant I get the special board from the factory for both AC units,

Hi all,
I'm sitting in Tucson in 100 degree temp. Zone 1 is set at 72 cool. Zone 2 is set at 72 cool but is not producing any cold air. Fans are set on high. My problem is in Zone 2. It sometimes produces cold air. I don't expect zone 1 to get cold because of all the windows. Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated. House A/C has not been used very much.
or serviced.

Thank you kindly,

Look at where the air filter is located on A/C inlet and see if you are bypassing/short-circuiting cold air. The cold air is not making it into the exit ducts. There can be big leaks there, and you can easily fix it with A/C tape or Gorilla tape. The white plastic shroud may have stripped screws as well. Easy enough to check, I would start there.

Yes, this is a great suggestion. We have an 06 Inspire which we bought new back then, and we had the sunshades I think they're called for the big front window and the driver's side and door and little window. The awnings sufficed for the rest. However, I knew that anyone walking by could see inside easily, so when we were at Pelican Lake near Naples, we visited with a fellow who travels from there to northern MI and installs the sunshades. We had them made and installed for all the rest of the windows. Not only can folks no longer see inside, the heat reduction we feel is significant.

One to keep in mind Mary is they can't see inside during daylight, at night you can't see out but they can see very clearly in. The view is obstructed on the side with the most/brightest light.

If they have not been serviced for awhile, no reason to not have them serviced now. The tech can also help you trouble shoot the rear unit, to be sure everything is working well.

I higher temps, you want to maximize the ability of your AC units to perform well. Cleaning the coils can make a big difference in performance. (Though your description seems a bit different then just dirty coils...

And yes to the tips on reducing heat gain, and managing temperatures, to help the AC's support cooling the rig.

Best to you,

Recently I had to replace the front A/C Cover. In Doing so, I cleaned out the heat exchanger fins by using air pressure from coach. The fins where quite dirty and partially blocked in places with leaves. Also, with the new fiberglass cover there was new  1" Foam tape that makes sure the fan is only getting air that comes thru the heat exchanger fins.  This tape provides a seals between cover & top of A/C unit that the routs the air.  If a lot of air bypasses these fins suspect cooling drops way down.  By the way we are also in Tucson, but only thru this weekend then off. Our A/C units are working fine.

The outside temperature is not the issue. The only time we could not cool the coach was when we were on 30Amp and could not run both units. The biggest problem for heat control is the front windshield and those foil backed rolls that every RV shop sells makes a huge difference.

Blowing dust and debris of the coils does help. Follow up with a good spray of:

Or similar product, also helps remove any residual build up of light gunk on the foils. It's also not uncommon to find insects have made part of your coils a nest. And last years maintenance, I removed enough cotton wood white 'fluff' to stuff a small pillow:)! (We'd been in a park with the cotton wood blurring around the full park. And, rear AC unit was parked within 4-5' from the bottom limbs of a cotton wood tree. Great for added shading, but buy did it get into the unit...

And agree with Dan's assessment about front windscreen being the number one area for heat gain. Outside screens, surprisingly darker is better then lighter colors, help keep cut the heat gain. But the shinny silver insulation material Dan described, does an even better job of keeping the heat out. Probably tied for the 2nd highest heat gain in a coach, are the rear caps (Less insulation in the rears cap, then in the side of the coaches.), especially if it's a darker color paint. And tied with the rear cap, is the solar dome over the shower. We took some of the silver insulation material, double filed it and taped the edges up with clear packing material. Use two curtain rods and insert this into the solar dome over the shower, really cuts out the heat gain, or in winter travels, heat lost. (And we have 4 out of our 5 solar panels spanning the top of the solar dome, on a conventional roof rack mount bracket. They provide shading, as well as really cut down on the drum sound effect of heavy rain, or hail. And even this covering, defused light still comes in thru the dome, we find the insulation helps quite a bit.) And I think all of us have seen the same silver bubble insulation cut to shape for side windows, and reflecting that those who are in extreme temperatures have also aded. (Though many of these I seem to see in coaches with single vs dual pane windows.) And the final tips for controlling heat gain and making it easier for the AC units. Is to head North, and add ice to your scotch:)!

Best of luck to you in Tucson. Let us know if you find anything that was not working well on your AC unit,

Those cooling fins are super soft. I tried to vacuum them once and bent quite a few of them. I had to go back with a "fin straightener" to fix my self-inflicted boo boo... I finally cleaned them well with a stiff bristle brush.
