House battery update

I appreciate all the assistance and suggestions on replacement of the house batteries. I am considering the option of having 4 of the 6 volt gulf cart batteries installed locally rather than my original thought of two 8D deep cycles. The local business that is doing the installation says they can run these in series to obtain a 12 volt system required for the charging system. I am no expert on this so does this sound like a good route to go? They said amp hours will be equal to that of the two 12 volt 8d's and much less expensive. Make sense? Thought I would check with you guys before proceeding. Thanks.

My understanding is that they will work fine, but you will need to check the water level on a regular basis. I would say probably monthly. it's not worth the money savings to me or the extra maintenance because if a cell goes below the top of the plate, it could ruin your batteries. That said, they do make a gadget that you can fill all of the batteries at one time, still too much of a pain for me, I I have more money than I have time, so I want Low to no maintenance.

If you don't boondock much, four 6 volt golf cart batteries will be fine. If you do, some years ago, Eric Olstrom modified my sliding tray that held the two 8D's so it would hold six golf cart batteries giving me about 680 amp hours, considerably more than two 8D's.

2002 Intrigue. Back in 2004, I replace my two 8D house batteries with eight (yes 8) Trojan T105 6-volt golf cart batteries. It took a slight modification to the battery tray to accomplish this, but it can be done. I posted a photo of the installation years ago, and for years thereafter I could find it in the photo files … but it seems to have been purged from the photos. But it can be done and it gives you 900 amp-hours. Great for boondocking. The first set of batteries lasted for 10 years until I replaced them … not because they were weak, just because it seemed like it was time. Current set of T105s is 4 years old and I expect to get another 4 to 6 years easy. Great batteries and a great configuration.Steve B, #11382  Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Steve, how did you get 8 t105 's into a tray that held two 8D's? I had mine extended by Eric an inch or two just to hold six. I don't think there's enough room in my installation to extend it enough to hold 8. Can you post a picture?
