Newbie questions.

Yahoo Message Number: 115675
Hi gang. Enjoying the heck out of my 2004 Intrigue. Doesnt take long to be spoiled by one of these fine rigs.
I have a couple simple questions, almost embarrassed to ask... but some one say any question is a good question right??
So here goes.
1) when at the campground, and wanting to use hot water, I turn on the electric hydro hot. My question is, should Ieave it on, or turn it off after the showers are done. In other words, does it hurt the unit to just leave it on the entire time I'm camping?
2) what size is my LP tank?
I was looking at the restrictions on LP tank size as it relates to the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. They said the LP had to be shut off, and a single tank unit could be no larger than 60 gal. If twin tanks, 45 gal. Piece. Mine is single, and I'm not sure the size.
So... stupid questions? If so, I will blame it on my newbie status. Thanks gang, you all have always been so helpful.

Turn electric Hydro Hot on and leave it on. When camping in cooler temps turn diesel on as well, leave it on, let it cycle as needed.

My coach has 11 gal LPG tank, but I have electric fridge. Only stove top is gas ( going on third year on same tank).

Greg, thanks. Did you convert to a residential fridge? When your driving, how does the fridge stay cold?

Also, the diesel part of hydro hot.. I've never used it, guess I should play around with it. It auto cycles just like the ac units?

My coach came with residential fridge, runs off inverter/house batteries while driving. Hydro Hot on diesel cycles on and off as you demand hot water or interior heat. Run it, it's good for it to run. I won't run it if it is super hot outside in summer, but otherwise I like to run it as much as I can.

I have an 03 Intrigue 42ft Ovation with Hurricane Heater. We leave ours on only for hot water and/or extra heat. Our propane tank is 30 gallons, and there's a shutoff toggle in the refill bay panel.

Have fun, and safe travels.

Have same coach as yours, #11823. We always use the diesel on the hydro hot. With 3 girls the electric will never keep up at shower time., and we turn it off when done. Heats up quick when needed.
Have gone thru tunnels Virginia beach , Norfolk area and when you stop to get it checked, they only wanted it turned off. Don't know the size, she didn't care

Jeff, thanks.
If I had to guess, based on looking at the tank, 30 gallon seems reasonable. I also have the shutoff switch, so that would be easy to meet the requirements. Always glad when I ask questions...so many knowledgeable folks out there.

I'll add that some Hydro Hots have a Single Electric Element, and others have a Double Electric Element.

My wife and I can both take navy showers back to back, and we have a HydroHot with a Single Elective Element. (I'll be off some I suspect (Well actually, the DW would just say I'm off quite a bit!!), but these HydroHot Elements draw about 1200-1250W. Sort of like a curling iron. Two of them working, does a much faster recovery of the hot water.) Our 'Electric' is on at all times while on shore power. (I also turn it on when boon docking, and running the generator for any reason.)

We use the Diesel when one is in the shower, and the other is doing dishes, or if say we have a hot wash going on in the Wrinkle'Lator Splendid. And I agree with Greg, run that diesel often. Heck, even if you don't need it, exercise the unit at least once a week. Use it or Lose It... I also always let it complete it's own burn cycle. Meaning if I turn it on, and it starts up, I wait until it has fully run and shut down waiting to start up again. Getting the chamber hot and up to full temp, helps keep it clean.

We had the Norcold 1200 at first. I put the Amish Cooling Unit on it, as I was trying to retain boon docking capability. But once we added 1200W of solar, and 800AH battery bank, and traveled with it for about a year - we knew we had abundant electric, even when not on shore power. So we did swap out to the Samsung RF18 Residetntial Fridge. It's my wife's favorite mod so far. (Mine. Well I like HiFi, and added a pair of Martin Logan ceiling Emotion R's for stereo duty. (I'm sometimes known to wear shirts with a 'Got Tubes?' logo...) But I admit, I do like the RF18.

So like Greg, we're also on about month 28-30 on the same tank of LP, dang thing never seems to drop below 3/4 of a tank. Stove top only duty!

Enjoy your coach, the 04 Intrigue, is a fine year and coach. CAT or ISL, either work well... Travel safe,
Smitty

Good Question. back in the day there was a rod that neutralized the PH of the water to prevent the electric element from failing. If it hasn't been replaced I would do so. TWInsall 2004 intrigue 11731

Thanks Randy. I am relieved about the tunnels. Also, with the hydro hot, I will need to start using the diesel. I am guessing I will have problems with it, because the former owner never needed to use it, and never really did. Thanks again.Dave From: Country-Coach-Owners@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Country-Coach-Owners@yahoogroups.com] Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2018 6:18 PMTo: Country-Coach-Owners@yahoogroups.comSubject: Re: [Country-Coach-Owners] Newbie questions.  Dave Have same coach as yours, #11823.  We always use the diesel on the hydro hot. Thanks Greg, Great tip. I will look into it. A little skeptical though… when it comes to heating, electrical, (and the list goes on and on) I am let’s just say…. Challenged. I haven’t found a lawn that I couldn’t figure out the best way to cut it though…  but thanks again.Dave From: Country-Coach-Owners@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Country-Coach-Owners@yahoogroups.com] Sent: Monday, July 23, 2018 9:21 AMTo: blmarcione@... Just my 2 cents. When u are parked in a RV Park and at times in close quarters, I leave my
Diesel part off and only heat by the electrical heating element. I do have my Hydro hot serviced
Each year as part of my yearly service. But when I do turn it on for showers or clothes washing
It exhaust to the the left side of the coach and it does smell. When there R people sitting out side
It is annoying. I'm just trying to be a good neighbor while parked.

Dave, even if you don't use the Hydro Hot you should fire it off monthly. You should also have the maintenance done on it yearly consisting of: replace the nozzle, replace the filter, and do a general cleaning of the inside and outside of the unit. Since you probably don't know what color fluid is in it I would have it changed so you know. Keep you liquid levels where they are supposed to be in your recovery tank, when it gets low just add distilled water, you shouldn't need to add more of the pink or green liquid unless you run into some other problem where you have a dramatic loss of volume. Hope this helps.

It helps a lot. Thanks Gary. I did have the hydro hot serviced in December of 2017. I will start getting into maintenance of this more intentionally.
