Toyo M170 Tires

Yahoo Message Number: 116179
Planned to put new tires on this October, Due to an order mix up, I'm having to look at putting on Toyo M170 tires. Anyone know anything about these tires and where I can find reviews on the M170 being installed on coaches? Already checked out irv2 and other RV sites, mostly good reviews. I plan to have them installed at Les Schwab's in Junction City, OR.

Thanks

Put Toyos on my rear wheels a year ago, happy, happy. Know others who are also doing well.

I do not trust Toyo tires I had two blow out on my steer tires a day apart from one and the other. After the second one blew I changed our all for Michelin

Just say no to Toyo

Toyo came OEM on our coach and gave great service for 8 years. Changed to Michelins due to all the "positive" hype I'd read. 5 years later I threw them away due to excessive sidewall cracking. Went with new Toyos 2 years ago for a lot less $$, even with FMCA discount. I love the Toyos.

What was the age of the tires and how many miles on them?
In the last coupe of years Toyo
Has built a whole new tire .
We also went through this tire issue on this sight for several yrs and Michelin has also had more than its share of problems
I don't think Dickman would sell you a tire if it was doomed for failer

I bought a set of Michelin XZ2 highway tires some years ago. They were the smoothest, quietest, and were free of any wandering. The only issue was the y only lasted 39 months appox. So Dickman bought back the tires giving me a nice credit for unused tread left and as XZE's weren't easily available I ended up with Continental HSL-1. They were a great tire after I got couple of 100 miles on them. Well I had some bad rear shocks which allowed one of the tires to get slightly out of round, so while in Tucson, two yers later, I went to Redmond tire and met with the Continental Rep and he bought the bad tire and one good one. I would have had to wait a week for a replacement Continental. So I ended up buying a pair of XZ2A's for the front and we rotated all the tires. With the buy back plus buying the two Michelins at a discount, the bill wasn't too bad. THe Redmond people were great to me, but no one is as efficient or as fair as the guys at Dickman Les Schwab in Junction City. They bent over backwards when I had Toyo problems with the Allure and again with the Intrigue. The Xz2A have been good tires as have the HSL-1, were they as nice to drive as the XZ2, no. But the Sun and our very dry climate at home when we don't travel just caused issues. Redmond here in El Paso, says all michelins have troubles in our climate even when covered. But the XZ2A's are approaching 3 years old with out the slightest hint of problems. In case your wondering when the XZ2 failed I switched from 12R's to 315's. Because I have the Cummins ISL I have a different set up of rear axle and tag than if I had a C-12. So the 315's will fit. If you are ever looking for shocks, just tell the dealer you have a Magna rear end set up and don't believe what you find on the internet... TWInsall 2004 Intrigue 11731.

We have had Toyo M170's on the drive and tag axles for four years and 20,000 miles. They were put on by Dickman's Les Schwab in Junction City.

We just signed up with FMCA thinking that the Michelin discount would be worth the $50.00 as we get ready to replace the steer tires. But Dickman's quoted $1,452.32 for two Toyo M144's out the door. Even if I add the FMCA $50.00 to their Toyo price, they're cheaper than the FMCA discounted Michelins.

I learned something else in this process. According the Dickman's store manager, the age clock does not start ticking until the tire is installed. Take it for what you will - he is selling tires after all. But it makes sense to me and I will determine future replacements based on invoice date vs sidewall stamped date.

Dickman recommended Michelin until Michelin made the deal with FMCA.

There are other options as well such as Bridgestone about which I have heard nothing but good and no sidewall cracking.

I've shared my story on this board before about my very disappointing experience with Dickman's. I found their salesman Paul, who I believe has retired, to be unethical. (I told him my three conditions for the purchasing of 8 tires, one was that they be under 6 months of age. He did explain that age was not important, and that they could not guarantee the age. I said that tire shops had ordered tires from the warehouse with a condition to pull 6 month and younger tires. And that to me as an RV owner, the date stamp age of the tire was important. That we'd have to agree to disagree about the importance of tire dates. He took the order, and my deposit. He also updated a comment on the invoice about 'No guarantee of tire age.' And then he never emailed me the copy of the invoice, as he said he would. (If he had, which he should have that same day, or the next. I would have canceled the order based upon that comment. And gone up the management tree to point out the Paul had done this without telling me he was going to. And should never had accepted my order, when he knew that under 6 months of age was 'what the customer wanted'.) Tires came in, and after me needing to call him back two different times - he finally went out and looked and confirmed that all of the tires were over 6 months of age, one was about year old. I could not get into the shop in person, never have been to their shop, as we'd run out of state for a medical issue for my MIL. (Would have returned to the shop for the tires, if they had been what I asked for.) For several months I tried to work things out with the stores Manager, being preached out a few times about how ignorant us RV owner's are about tires. And how wonderful he was, as he and Dickman's used to provide tires to Country Coach, and I believe he said Monaco too. The final straw, after me disputing the deposit with American Express, due to the merchandise not meeting a condition of my order - was in writing to American Express - he called me a liar.) So, needless to say I do not recommend Dickman's. And it was really a shock to me, after all of the positive comments I'd read by other CC owner's about this specific shop. I will not reward, or recommend, businesses that I've had personal experience with at being unethical. (And this was an abbreviated repeating of my experience with Dickman's.)

No problems with LS itself, and while I don't use Toyo tires - I know many RV owner's that are pleased with their performance, and price. I also feel at the Tier 2 & 3 levels, that Hankook tires are worth considering. And know of some owner's that run Michelin on their steers, and Hankook or Toyo on the rear's/tag's.

Best of luck to you,
Smitty

I have never had a problem with Toyo tires. The only blowouts I've had (2) have been with Michelins.

We have Toyos on our steer axle because that's all we could get it a pinch a couple years ago. The tires have performed and, are wearing well. My only complaint is that they stink. The smell was very strong when they were new and, I still notice it after 2 years.

Is the stink heat related? When I tow my Ford F-150 I have a rubber smell from my front tires.

I don't believe that the smell is temperature dependent.

I put M170's on the front of my Magna (315's) in June of this year. Had ordered Michelins, but found them back ordered and couldn't wait as the previous Michelins were timed out. Dickman convinced me that these were an excellent substitute for the Michelins and the price was several hundred $$$ less.

Spen 1,500 miles on the road this summer and have had no issues. Perhaps a tiny bit rougher ride, but that may be because Dickman inflated them higher than I might have. Now looking at the rears (Michelins) timing out, so will be interested in the coming year about further comment.

I have 4 quotes from Costco for 8 Michelin's depending on the series from about $4100-$4400. They don't mount large tires and that would run about $400 at a different shop. We are in Oregon so there is no sales tax. We have a 2011 Holiday Rambler Endeavor 43'. My wife fell in love with the floor plan so no CC for us...yet. The original tires on the coach are Firestone G670. No indication of any sidewall cracks. Only 32000 miles but they are aged out. We attended a Monaco maintenance rally in Indiana and my neighbor had his Michelins replaced with 8 new Michelins due to sidewall cracking. So, I'm not sure that I want Michelins. He told me they were $6500. I also had a quote from Les Schwab for about $5400 for Michelins and that included mounting and disposal of the old tires. We have owned the coach one year so I don't know if it was kept indoors or if the tires were covered. There are no covers with the coach so I doubt they were. Btw. My tire size is 275 R80 22.5. Hope this helps.

The tire debate and discussions have been going on for ever. I have owned many sets Toyo's twice, Continentals twice and Michelins twice. I got the best service from the Continentals. I have had so many Toyos replaced under warranty for both coaches that I can't remember any more. I have had only one bad Continental tire out of 14. I had 7 bad Michelins out of 10. 13 Bad Toyos out of 20+ Toyos. So my experience shows Continentals are the best choice with only one tire going out of round. The best ride was XZ2 on the Intrigue and the Continentals on the Allure. TWInsall 1998 Allure 30255 and 2004 Intrigue 11731. I can remember back in the early 2000's Goodyears were the tire to hate on Magnas and Affinities. People said they got good result from Bridgestone, but that the ride was a little compromised. Foretravel owners loved their XZA3 in the early 2000's and Michelin gave a 10 year life span. They were made in Canada? 275R80 22.5.

Yes the tire debate goes on and on.... I just got back from a week of training at Tiffin and while in the chassis shop we talked about tires a bit and they mount up in the neighborhood of 25,000 tires a year. He said that the reason they use Michelins is because it's the only tire that is round. Every tire once mounted is then checked for roundness and if its more than his allowable amount (I honestly can't remember but I think he said .015 - .020 " max) it's not used. He said that no other brand can even come close.

I looked at pallets and pallets of mounted tires ready to be installed and every one had a written number in white on the tire which I assumed was the out of roundness number as the numbers were .010, .013, .003 etc...
