Slideout Inoperable

Yahoo Message Number: 116959
I pulled my slides in a couple of days ago, got parked in another spot and the living room slide, driver's side went out a few inches, made a noise and stopped. I was able to get it back in. It appears the noise came from the front of the slide. The motor does work. It looks like access to this part of the slide mechanism is under the wheel well. I'm hoping this is a shear bolt that broke. I did buy extra bolts from Kevin Waite several years ago to have on hand.

Anyone else have this happen? How do you get access to the slide mechanism under the wheel well? If I can't get a mobile tech that can do the work on site, any recommendations on a place in the West Valley of the greater Phoenix area?

Judy, if your coach is a 40 footer I can tell you what you need to know. I had one for years and replaced a number of shear pins on the front slide. I live in Gold Canyon. AZ. Unfortunately I am leaving tomorrow AM. If you want to call me I can give you some verbal help. 925-858-2217. Jock Vargo.

All I can offer is Spectrac Gilbert, AZ 480-545-5533. Not sure if they do mobile, never used them. I am in Casa Grande, AZ the only mobile guy I haven't used is Jimmy's RVs, used some of the others.

Judy,

Look in the compartment where your invertor/charger is, up high. I think you will find your problem there.

Yes! Got under there to change the pin, found the working space very tight, and called an RV tech. He had a very small battery powered tool that fit into the space and changed it swiftly.

Well worth it!

To access the panel, turn the wheel climb in and there are about six bolts holding the cover on. Easy to remove but a bitch to reinstall. It is easy with two sets of hands. One to install the cover bolt and one to push up the cover to align the bottom bolt. While your in there might as well grease the slide out gear. Hope this helps. If it's not the he shear bolt let me know and can probably get you through other problems or 2 storker located on iRV2 can.

Thanks Mike. I have an appointment with RV Master Tech in Glendale, AZ on the 17th. Don't think this is something I want to tackle.

Sir you would be wise to contact Eric Olstrom at Olstrom Custom Coach at 520- 624-2024. It would be worth the drive to Tucson.

Judy, as mention by another person is a very important issue. Open the compartment that houses the hydraulic canister and mount for the electric motor that drives the slide in and our. It will be bolted to sidewall of the compartment with 4 bolts. These bolts have a tendency of coming loose. These need to be check regularly. These bolts being loose allows the motor in the next compartment to move . This allow the shaft and the motor to turn causing the shear pins to break. This was the main problem with my number of shear pin repairs. After I corrected this issue, I never had another shear pin break.

Thanks for the offer Jack. I have made an appointment to have it looked at on Jan. 17. I don't think this is something I can do by myself.

Hi Judy,
Had the exact same problem with my DS front slide. There is a cover held on by approx. 12 tech screws that have to be removed to access the shear bolt. The issue becomes removing all of the silicone from each screw head in order to get a firm grip with the socket. Turning the steering wheel towards the left should allow you to get to the cover without removing the tire. Also, recommend replacing the old tech screws with new stainless tech screws.

And, recommend lubing all slide mechanisms (rack and pinion) for all slides with the appropriate dry lube, as the lack of lubricant is most likely the cause of your shear bolt failure.

Good Luck,
