Cummins 350 HP diesel

Yahoo Message Number: 117159
I have a 04 Inspire with a 350 Cummins Diesel. I'm starting to get a red warning light when I first start the
engine, especially when weather is cold. The engine runs bout 30 seconds and shuts off. I get this red light saying to service the engine. Has anyone had this issue? Someone told me it could be the glow plugs.
Thanks
John Busby

Look at the codes on your silver leaf on get a shop to pull the codes. It could be the EGR valve if so get it fixed soon. It could lead to turbo problems.

Cheapest thing to do is check your coolant level then check your oil level. My bet is low coolant.

FYI, modern diesels motors such as yours do not have glow plugs. You have an intake grid heater that warms the air being fed to the motor

If the outside air temperature is near freezing the oil becomes viscous and difficult to move through the oil filter. Engine shutdown occurs. Use your engine block heater before starting the engine.

On the theme of 'How cold is it?'... If real cold, try the following:

-Pre heat the engine block (As mentioned.)
-Go thru two start up cycles, of waiting for the Start Engine light to go out. (The 'pre warmer' does help.)
-What kind of fuel is in tank? Summer blend? Winter blend? (If Summer Blend, gelling could be a contributing factor.)
-What shape are your fuel filters in? Close to time to change, and in cold weather too?

And yes to pulling codes...

The ISC is a good engine, and was relatively mature in it's evolution in the year of your coach... Hope it is something simple...

Please close the loop back, and let us know what you determine. It could help other's in the future:)!

And best of luck,
