Gasket for Front Windshield Glass

Yahoo Message Number: 117299
Hello All, HELP IS APPRECIATED--- see Question.

We have a 2000 Affinity and replaced the front drivers side windshield in Tucson and the installer shattered the glass. Setting up the re-install he stated that a new gasket was needed. We agreed. Installer was there 3 hours and was not able to fully seat the windshield wherein he glued the top left corner and stated that it would be OK. Well, travel to Houston and the second day the dash was covered on bugs and damage to the passenger windshield. Third day and lots of duck tape made it to the KOA in Conroe, TX.

Once arriving KOA, we called Coach Glass and requested 2 new gaskets to match original equipment, 1 1/3".
What we received was two 1.5" gaskets. They do not work and do not fit... Spoke to Coach Glass several times and they now say they will send the ones we originally ordered but could care less if we have to pay for several installs, camping nights, and they insist we pay all charges plus another expedited shipping charge (over $200 each) and they are delaying our visit the 90 father in law that has issues with no friends or family near him. Coach Glass expedited charge says that the quickest it will get here is Tuesday.

QUESTION:

Do any of you have contacts for the correct gaskets near Houston so we could get this done faster?

Thanks much,

Corky & Kathleen, 00 Affinity B&B 5769

Let's be perfectly frank here.... It's a 19 year old coach, things aren't always available and a lot of the time we have to make work with what's available today. As owner of a RV repair shop I will not replace windshields in my shop without having the coach inside on flat ground giving the installer the best possible scenario and able to leave the coach overnight or over days to get it to come back together properly. Glass work isn't cheap and shouldn't be rushed.

It's not unusual to change the opening to make current gaskets work with the available glass.

Just my 2 cents....

Just had my driver side windshield replaced. RV Glass Solutions handled everything very well. They shipped the windshield, gasket and caulk to the installer of my choice. The two men who did the job were done in One hour.

Sorry to hear your problems

These windshields are tricky on the Affinity. Getting them installed right requires a level location to start. Just because one side is bad doesn't mean both sides might require adjustment to make the new gasket or window fit. I went through 3 installation starting in Phoenix AZ and getting finally done right a year later at creative coach near Lakeland FL. Nobody wanted to pay for the mistakes they had done.
The fronts of these coaches can contort so the opening will change. It looks like there's a support in the middle between the two panels of glass, but there's not really. Jacking might be required to get the opening squared up a bit for the new glass to go in proper. Trust me when I say any old, respond to your location glass shop in most cases can't do this job right (period). The on first install no one wanted to replace the gasket (but I ordered one just in case) when they removed the window the old gasket just came apart.
If the new window and gasket almost fits, but looks like it's on the verge of pushing out it's not installed right. If they say we need to cut the gasket to make it fit it's not installed right.

Sincerely

Many Thanks All for sharing your experiences. Yes, each installation our coach was level with the slides in.  The middle support upper connection was broken which allowed the drivers windshield to push the upper right corner of the passenger 1" inside the coach.
We are hoping that the new gaskets arrive on Tuesday to complete the installation of both windshields so that we can hit the road on Thursday

What Jim Lewis said! While I have had mine replaced by RV Glass Solutions, the principles that Jim states are the same ones that were required on my 2008 coach.

I have been to Jim's shop, more than once, he is the only other place that I would choose for work. He just does it right.

I agree with Alex. I took mine out with it setting outside my machine shop because it had a gaping hole into my coach from the driver side window. I was able to reposition them and get it to seal up properly. Seemed like it took me a couple hours but it's awful nice not to have the wind noise driving down the road anymore.

Corky, what did you do about the broken middle support?

I believe the middle support on my '98 Concept is broken and I need to reset both sides of my windshield and would like to replace the gaskets as well. I have lots of wind noise and some small leaks at the upper outside of the drivers side.

I spoke to Greg at Country Coach a few years ago and he said they could remove both sides of the windshield, repair the center support and resinstall with new gaskets. He was confident they would get it right and my windshield problems would be solved. I am in Kentucky and just have not had time to get to Oregon to have it done. I may need to find someone closer who can do the work.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
David

We had our front W/S replaced by a "local" installer in Rochester MN. RV Coach Glass shipped the glass to them and we contracted with the local people to install the glass. Big mistake. RV Coach Glass recommends a MINIMUM of 24 hours, 48 hours is better to remove and reinstall the glass properly. The "local" guy said he could do it in 3. The new glass split from top to bottom 3 days and 1500 miles later. We called RV Coach Glass and when we were in FL had the W/S replaced again at their facility in Lakeland. So far so good. Lesson learned: 1.) Use RV Coach Glass. 2.) Use their facility OR use someone they WARRANT. Since we used a shop recommended by RV Coach Glass, they replaced the W/S for free. Unfortunately, on an older coach, the buy in is low cost, but repairs are constant and expensive. That said, we have a long, long way to go before we approach the original sticker price of this coach.
