Not too far of a drive. If you don't get lucky, we've stayed at Sparks Marina RV several times. Not an Outdoor Resorts by any stretch, but well run, and large enough for big coaches.
A side story. My DW and I are returning from our maiden longer voyage in our then relatively new to us 04 Allure. We both were still working at the time, but thru horse trading with our bosses = we both got four weeks off. (Well, except we both had to be available if needed, which ended up in probably 16 total hours for the DW, and close to 24 hours for me. But, sitting on a conference call along the shores of Beyond Hope, ID Lake Pend Oreille - sure beats being in the office!!). We took the last 5 days of vacation, bombing down Hwy 395 from Spokane to San Diego area (Or where 395 cuts into I15.). We pulled into a Casino across the Highway from the Reno Harley Davidson's. Outise temp was 117 degrees. Generator cranked, and both AC, and OTR AC, cranked on high! While checking in, the last spot available and only because someone had to pull out about two hours earlier for a family emergency. The people at the front desk (Hotel and RV Park both.) advised me to be aware that it was Hot August in Reno, and that their was a "Club" having a "Parking Lot Event" that evening. Well we had no idea what Hot August was all about. But we found out!!! The 'Club' was a group for Los Angelos Country regional Hells Angles Clubs. The 'Event' was a BBQ and Live Band Event that went on until about 11:15PM. (Still can hear the beat of the drum, raspy voice of the singer, and well 'lubricated' crowd using their vocal boxes!!!). So, 11:45PM, both AC's still cranked, but now on 50A Shore Power, we both stat to doze off. BUT THEN! Not knowing what Hot August was all about. We did know that he local Reno Harley Davidson Dealer (Also throwing a big party across the freeway!), was also sponsoring a Midnight Harley Drive!!! Around 11:45PM, the Casino staying LA are Harley Clubs fired up their bikes. At about the same time, from across the freeway, we could hear the starting of the Harley's from at the Harley Davidson's Reno store. Now, the highway onramp going South, had recently finished a major upgrade. You cross under the freeway form Reno Harley Davidson, and you just pull down from the Casino's parking lot - to both come together and merge onto the On Ramp of the highway. It runs up a hill for about a 1000 yards, to highway level. The full side of the hill, is that beautiful poured in place concrete patterned walls. (Pre graffiti:)!).
Well, the band drums and raspy singer and fun vocal crowd of the Casing Parking Lot 'Event' were forgotten. The 20 minutes or so of what seemed be thousands, and could easily have been over 1000, Harley Davidson's accelerating up the onramp, with the 'reverb' of their distance Harley Thunder Sound off of the concrete embankment wall - was a sound that we'll never forget!!! Our dawg, jumped up on the bed quivered! Hell, I quivered!
And the fun thing about this, is we had to run from Reno to San Diego the next day in one shot. So, we were planning to pull out around 6:00AM for an early start. Not much sleep, especially as between 1:30-2:30AM, the LA Harley Davidson Region members returned in various groups to the Casino.
And hey!!! Not complaining at all!!! A yearly event that we did not know about. The BBQ was good smelling, and as I walked over to check things out around 8:00PM, the crowd was the normal mix of Harley Owners, clothing and all!!! Some groups a bit scary looking, but all were having a good time. I know this group had everything from Engineers, Doctors, Police Officers, Bankers, Housewives, and sure, probably some other combinations of society too:)! They were having a good time, and they had their own security, from a specific sub club, making sure everyone continued having a safe good time.... The night had cooled down to about 105 when they all took off to the Midnight Ride - and I have not doubt they had a great time!! So sincerely, no complaints.
We were just at the wrong place, at the wrong time, because we did not know about this yearly event!!!
Will never forget it, and admit, we do now check the Reno schedule before pulling in to stop. We found the Sparks Marina, the next time we went thru. And have stayed at least 5 times awhile visiting a friends in the area, and on our way to locations:)!
End of my small 'crisp' story!!!!
