DIRECTV Alternative Ideas

Hello All:

I disconnected from DirecTV almost two years ago, not long after AT&T bought them. They asked why I was leaving, and I told them when DirecTV first came to the industry they were innovative and working to create something new that broke the old paradigm. When they started getting long in the tooth, before AT&T bought them, all they did was get new users to sign up at a reduced rate and then they grew their revenue by increasing rates. Not that there is anything wrong with paying more if you are delivering a quality product and great service. When they were young & hungry they were at least better than cable. Cable has stepped up their game.

What I do now:

At home, I have an Over the Air (OTA) antenna and a Tablo box that will record OTA from four different channels simultaneously. If I want Fox, CNN, NatGeo and the like, I get them from Fubo. TV as a Roku app via the internet.

On the road, I get some of my TV OTA and then I still have my Fubo. TV via my wifi or campground WIFI. We also listen to a lot of XM and read.

Shortly after AT&T bought DirecTV they went on the record, that they were not committed to the satellite technology and if they could do much of what DirecTV was doing, via their cellular or land line technologies, they would move that way.

Things are definitely in a state of flux. It is worth it to stay well read and choose your technologies wisely. For those that ask, the Tablo box is a one time fee of around $200.00 and a monthly TV Guide update of $4.95 and uses an app via Roku. The Fubo. TV is about $40.00 a month. I have a Verizon unlimited grandfathered MIFI I use on the road.
