ISL's, and ISC's, are known for Exhaust Manifold related opportunities:)! Since you were cautioned about a possible leak, I'd suggest either a slightly warping manifold, with actual blow exhaust manifold gaskets. Or a cracked manifold, that you have not detected. The discoloration you see, is another nod towards one, or even both, of the above. The sound you describe, could be the other items mentioned - but also a combination of the above could also present that noise. (Our crack, #3 tube, was more of a high pitch scratch sound then a ticking sound. But that was a crack. I could see how sound George described could happen with gasket leak.)
When the engine is not running, get mechanical telescoping mirror and flashing and hang into the engine bay as much as you can. Look on the and around the manifolds, close to where you are seeing the discoloration. (I'll share that upon occasions, in our 04 Allure, I've found enough room to crouchup behind the fan belt, and get close to the engine. (Easier getting up for me, then down:)!) - this will get you some closer access.
Best of luck to you, and please let us know what you find out, as it could help others down the road:)!
