Engine shutdown

Couple weeks ago I posted a question about my 07 inspire 400 Cummins shutting down after I did the wax valve conversion. Since then I had default code read an it said high temperature air intake. I replaced the intake sensor thinking it just failed. Today on test run it ran fine, engine temp was a little high I thought around 215. I returned home an adjusted the internal seat in wax valve 1/2 turn in or clockwise. It took about 1 hour because I let engine cool just a little. Fired it back up an it shutdown less than a mile down the road. basically same scenario as first time two weeks ago when I stopped for lunch.
I got out an adjusted the needle valve that I put inline with the wax valve so fan would turn about half speed before it reaches the wax valve temp setting, started the engine drove about 20 miles again. I pulled into a truck stop killed the engine for about 30 minutes, started it back up and engine shutdown before I traveled a mile. Let it set a minute started back up an drove home 20 mile at normal speed 65 to 70 mpg. no problems. I don't understand what the problem could be.

This is a possible drawback of the wax valve system. The original fan controller monitors a number of things the wax valve does not. One being intake manifold temps. Them temps inside the manifold heat up when you stop the engine. The original controller would see this upon restart and engage the fan to cool the manifold down, problem solved. The wax valve won't do this. The ECU is telling the fan to turn on and expects to see the manifold temps to fall. When they don't it shuts the engine down.

You can also do serious damage to the dash air conditioning with the wax valve if not careful.

Brian , I had the same problem. You have a wax valve that doesn't open until 195 degrees so you need to return it and get one that opens at 183 to 185 degrees. It doesn't sound like that little difference in temperature would make a difference, but it does. The problem is with the higher wax valve temp the air intake temp gets too high and shuts off the engine.

Another problem is that CC set the default to turn off the engine. That's why your engine shuts down totally. You need to go to a Cummins dealer to have the ECM set to default to idle, not shut down.

I bought the valve on eBay. It is adjustable, today my engine temp was running around 215 , I adjusted the seat in the valve an temp ran right at 195 degrees. That's about where it ran on the electronic fan control. It still shutdown after I restarted after setting 30 minutes. Is your valve adjustable ? Did your coach shutdown going down the road at normal operating temp or after restarting engine.

Brian. Mine doesn't have an adjustment. There was an orifice that came with the valve. The orifice is set to turn the fan at about 700 RPM on start up and slowly increase as the fluid is heated and increases RPM of the fan. As the engine temp reaches 185 degrees the fan runs at full RPM until the temp goes down to normal along with the intake temp. On going down the highway the normal air intake temp is 93 and up to 120 or 130 degrees in hotter weather. And after stopping at a rest stop, upon restarting everything runs normal. I bought the wax about four or five years ago from Source Engineering in Portland, Oregon area.

While you did not buy the wax valve from Source Engineering, I'd suggest a call to them maybe in order. Ask for, and wait for a return call if needed, from Scott.

Explain what you bought, and ask if anything S.E. can recommend to address the problem....

Not knocking what you have.... But 3 1/2 years on a ISL CAPS era engine, with Source Engineering's Wax Valve - Nooo problems! (Easier engine on a CAPS era ISL, built July 2003 - but, also great support and good product on our Wax Valve!!).

I appreciate everyone's input, I succumbed and called Scott you guys are right he's a nice guy I wish now I had dealt with him to begin with. I would highly recommend anyone looking to change to the wax valve call Scott with source engineering. My eBay valve is a little to hot but not the source of my problem. He explained that after a 30 minute or so stop, the engine coolant cools down an if you push the motor to much the first couple miles it heats up the intake air from turbo. When temp comes up enough fan will turn fast enough to take care of it. He said the shutdown mode on the Cummins needs to be turned off an I probably will never have an issue again because the temp really doesn't get high enough for any period of time to hurt anything. If the air gets to hot the engine will go into limp mode even with the shutdown mode turned off.
A couple of you basically told me the same thing an I appreciate it. So first thing in morning just take it easy for 3 or 4 miles till temp comes up to activate valve. Same thing when you stop for short periods of time an then restart. I'll let you know how things turn out.
