access to generator

1987 Country Coach SE.  Cannot access the generator from inside.  I release the plunger switch and it does not allow me to open the compartment.  Battery is good.  thanks for any suggestions
Wife passed a few years back we had a 43FT Wanderlodge Bluebird, installed telephone systems for JC Penney Stores all over the US marvelous job.  I am tired of sitting at home alone ("LONER). Just purchase a 1987 Vintage Country Coach in pristen condition.  Gonna travel this great USA again, so sad it will be alone this time.  First stop will be Veterians State Park Waycross, Ga and of course they have a golf course.  Ontheroadagain

The plunger is basically like a brake line on a bicycle. You pull the grip and it mechanically releases a lever that allows you access. The plunger should pull out 2". Can you pull the plunger at all?
