Engine overheating while pulling a grade

2003 CC INTRIGUE;  Cummins ISL 450 HP.
OVERHEATS TO THE POINT OF ENGINE SHUTDOWN WHILE PULLING A GRADE.
HAVE A NEW HYDRAULIC FAN AND ALL COOLING COILS HAVE BEEN PRESSURE WASHED CLEAN.  NOT SURE IF FAN IS KICKING INTO HIGH SPEED MODE WHEN TEMP REACHES 210 degrees.

If your coach has a Sauer-Danfoss fan controller, that could be the problem. We had that issue with our 2001 Intrique, #11238, ISC 350, several times until I replaced the S-D with a Source Engineering Thermal Wax Valve. Issue solved! If your coach has the S-D controller, unplug the connector and it should default to full RPM.

Note that to force the fan to run at high speed you want to disconnect the two pin power connector.  Some have wired a switch to interrupt the power to the SD controller so they no longer have to crawl on the ground.  If you pull the power connector with the engine running protect your eyes as the fan will kick up a lot of dust when it goes to high speed.

My fan controller was replaced not long ago by the previous owner but I would like to know where the plug is on case I need to disconnect in an emergency. Is it to the left when you open the engine access door? Thanks, Christian

The fan controller is located on the rear lower portion of the radiator housing.  You'll have to lay on the ground to see it.

It is easier to put a off on switch coming off the fuse which is in the compartment in front of the front left tire. When you turn it off the fan should go full speed

If you put in a switch at the fuse be sure you only switch the fan controller.  That fuse position on my coach protects more than just the fan controller.  I pulled the fuse and put a switch between the fuse panel and the fuse.  That fuse position on my coach is wire #75 and supplies power to the fan controller, VIM, and the Allison harness interface.  When I switched the power off the data buss froze until I switched the power back on.  Also one time I left the power off on that circuit and the coach would not start.  I had used a switch with a pilot light and I could see when I had toggled the switch and that alerted me to the starting problem.

this should not be happening. Disconnect your fan controller and see if your fan goes on to high. This should be totally obvious it will be roaring, howling blowing your hair. It is not subtle.

A few other thoughts. How old are the radiator hoses? (Could they be collapsing on you, reducing flow?) And thermostats can behave sporadically before complete failure. (Thermostat remaining closed, reduce water flow.)
Best of luck to you, please update when you find root cause!

Also make sure you are keeping your RPMs up pulling the grades. Our transmission prefers to shift to about 1100 RPM if I do not intervene. I keep my C-12 up around 1700 (redline is 2100) for any longer grades, brings the temp down very quickly.

I had problems with the Sauer-Danfoss fan controller, did what Don did and replaced it with the Source Engineering Thermal Wax Valve. A bit of work as I had to have a welding ship TIG weld a fitting into the upper radiator pipe. Works great now and I am glad I did it. I also ended up having a shop make new hydraulic lines instead of using the extension hoses that Source Engineering would normally supply. The extension hoses were out of stock and the lines I had were probably 20 years old. Local shop made new longer hoses and now one less thing to worry about.
