Dip stick sleeve

If there is one thing consistent about our friends at CCI, it is the lack of parity when dealing with problems. I have to chuckle (to keep from swearing) when I read that others have had similar problems with the good old plastic dip stick sleeve. What dip stick engineer ever thought up the idea that a plastic sleeve would hold up against the heat generated around the engine components?

I had an exaust manifold break and blow hot air onto the wonderful little sleeve while in San Diego last year. I called CC and talked to them about it. They said it was a Cummins problem. In anticipation of their response, I ordered and paid nearly $80.00 for a new sleeve to be sent to me. Armed with the sleeve, I went to Cummins in ElCajon and had the warranty replacement of the exaust manifold and installation of the sleeve.
They refused to cover the labor to install the sleeve, saying it was a CC problem and I was obliged to pay them another $75.00 for changing it.
Inasmuch as one of my primary goals is to remain alive and in good health if possible, I chose to sweep this little frustration away without further brain damage.

When problems occur that are obviously manufacturing errors such as the subject sleeve, the manufacturer should be held responsible for and have the common moral integrity to send a recall or at very least notify owners of their intention to replace the item. One would not expect that from your ordinary manufacturer, but what about the builder of "The word's finest"? Dream on Larry.
