Diesel Fuel Prices

Yahoo Message Number: 9596
Hi Folks,

Afer looking at the Flying J web site, it appears that the south is enjoying reasonable fuel prices, but for the north and west especially if you touch are in California - it's a ripoff. What I would like to ask - is the high fuel prices affecting your decision making on length and number of motorhome trips you are making this year? Fred Kovol

While I don't like the prices I enjoy traveling too much to let it bother me.

Hey Fred;

I fueled up yesterday at Flying J, $1.63. I think it more east of the Mississippi for the lower prices.
Our Magna gets 9.4 mpg on the road. Not bad for a tank weighing in at 28,000# That's with the wife cruising at 70mph.
So far it beats the hell of staying in hotels. steve

The price of diesel fuel is out of control here in Calif. Average price is about $2.37 per gallon and climbing everyday! With summer fast approaching, it will hit close to $3.00 plus I'm sure! The price of diesel will have a drastic affect on the amount of trips I take. If the price of fuel goes beyond the $3.00 mark and appears to stay there, I will more than likely get rid of the RV as it will no longer be cost effective for me to own it especially inside Calif. It would be cheaper to stay in a hotel than to drive any distance and have to pay for diesel! I'm ready to give up RV'ing because its no longer cost effective or even worth all the maintenance hassles! Unless you already own property here in Calif, its really not worth owning anything here! Taxes here are of the highest than any other state, your gouged at the pumps and still our politicians want more! Illegal Immigration is a real big problem here and they continue collect wellfare and free health care on the taxpayers. I can't wait to retire and get the hell out of Calif.
Sorry if I'm a little off topic, but I'm fed up with Calif. (Can you tell?)

Hi Fred,

In the scheme of things when it comes to owning a diesel motorhome, the fuel cost is a small part of tha overall cost. I won't make my travel plans based on diesel cost. When I purchased the coach I jumped off the cliff so I just as well enjoy the ride down.

Well, we just got back to Mich. from Tucson with our new 2004 Inspire. Yes prices are up but that is the cost of having fun. It is nice to have a big fuel tank so at least you can plan the fuel stops where it is a little cheaper. We got a 40 footer and plan to go to Oregon this fall and shorter trips around our area for the summer. We figure the fuel is the cheapest part of ownership. The taxes and lisence are what killed us. Ouch !! Happy R.V ing

Hi Fred, We arrived home with this coach for the first time on 9-11- 01. As of today, the cost of Diesel Fuel has increased by .41 per gallon. In the past year we lived in the coach 268 days and traveled 10,000 miles. We average 7.5 mpg, so the increase in fuel cost is .0546 per mile, 546.00 for the year. We will budget for the difference and continue to pursue our dream.
Planning fuel stops with the Flying J website saves us money and we feel confident on fuel quality.

Hi Fred,

Hmmm ... well it does make it difficult for me to travel as much as I would like. But, I finding out owning a motorhome is like having a high maintenance girl friend, so, it just comes with the territory.
On the bright side, I understand Country Coach has been looking at developing a coach that can run on hydrogen fuel cells. Right now city buses in Vancouver have them but they have the benefit of having a bus depot where they can refuel their buses at night with hydrogen. Also, it is possible a hybrid motor can be developed for coaches. I don't know if any RV manufacturers are looking at that possibility. I think if the RV industry could develop a high mileage motorhome, sells would shoot through the roof. Do we have any bright engineers out there that can assist the RV industry is area?

(snip) > is the high fuel prices affecting your decision making on length and number of motorhome trips you are making this year? Higher fuel prices aren't making a difference in our trips, and we're on the road more than half the year. I'm sure that there's a point at which fuel cost would affect our travel. I don't know what that point is now, but I'll know it when I see it .
