Clear Coat sluffing

Yahoo Message Number: 10762
We are experienceing a problem with the clear coat sluffing off on the top cap edges. The coach is a 2000 Intrigue. We have contacted Country Coach but they have turned a deaf ear to us; of course we feel that this problem is occuring a bit soon. When we purchased the coach we noticed the begining of this happening and was told that this was just overspray, well the overspray is starting to sluff down the verical edge.

If anyone one out there has a suggestion it would be most appriciated.

Thanks.
Bill

Bill,

We own a 96 Intrique and a similar problem is occuring. The Clear Coat near the top has started to peel away and on one side, the side usually protected from the sun, has started to peel. I did notice that the previous owner?, might had hit something wheras they did some repairs on a small spot, and the Clear Coat is peeling! However, a larger section away from the repair is worse only on the white painted section. The blue painted sections are still fine!, for now? I did notice that smaller sections around the rig are starting to peel away!
We took our coach to an RV repair place in Orange Co, Ca. off off Harbor Blvd, and they were a SCAM! One guy over the phone told me that it would probably cost around $1500-2000. When I got there, another guy quoted us around $5000. , once he saw it was a Country Coach and that was only for 3 sides. I reminded him that the coach had 4 sides plus the roof. The cost just went up, again! The total costs only included painting of the white paint, not the blue, and then a new clear coat! Needles, to say, we are still looking for a better place???

Had it fixed in 2003 in Sacramento. Brow was peeling extensively.
That area was originally clear coated over fiberglass was the diagnosis and is a no-no. Removed the peeling clear coat. Matching white paint applied. Clear coated. Still looks great. Cost @ $1,100. Can give shop name if interested.

Bill,

You need to wax your roof with a uv treatment to stop the clear coat from coming off.
Your roof is chaulking. This is addressed in your owners manual. CCI will not do anything about this because it is something we need to do as part of our regular maintenance.

Dean,

Ours is peeling extensively as well, but it is not only on the roof, but in several areas over the coach paint as well. We got a quote of around $2700, using polyurethane clearcoat for the roof only.

Per,

I am no expert on this issue. The truck fleet painter I used in Sacramento, the Paint Department, Inc in Chino, CA, and several boat shops said clear coat over fiberglass will result in the peeling of the clear coat. Clear coat apparently is made to cover paint. So I bought the paint plus clear coat solution and am happy. Now I use a liquid wax in the wash water to wax the roof monthly.

If you have clear coat peeling over paint, I would guess you have a different issue than I did. I do not have any useful info re polyurethane clearcoat.

Dean, Per;

If you get to the February, March messages, we had a discussion on clear coats.
The clear coat on your roof is allowing UV radiation to penetrate and breakdown the polyester gelcoat. The roof needs a good cleaning and painted with a color coat.
I've got a 95 Magna with the same problem. I've made my own paint. A two component acrlyic urethane that matches the current color. Just haven't found the time to clean and paint it yet. $2,700 is way to much for just painting the roof with a clear. In about 5 years it will start peeling again. A two component urethane cost about $160 to $180 per gallon and will do approximately 300 square feet.
